Recruiting Spotlight: 2018 Avery Martinez
Recruiting Spotlight: 2018 Avery Martinez
Avery Martinez, a senior at Cantwell Sacred Heart High School in Montebello, is a perfect example of the saying—“It’s not where you start, It’s where you finish.”
Martinez, who ran with So-Cal All Stars during the spring and summer, didn’t catch the eye of many college coaches, but he did with a handful of scouts due to his evolving all-around game.
Martinez is a quality defender and has an evolving offensive game“I feel I have a solid all-around game. I can shoot the 3-point shot, attack in transition, and I’m getting better at moving without the ball.” However, there is an area of his game that may be his ultimate strength—that being defense. “I do take a lot of pride in my defense,” explains Martinez.
Martinez has long arms, active hands, quick feet, and a mindset to shut down his opponent. Most players entering college will have the biggest adjustment on the defensive end, but Martinez may be that rare anomaly.
Despite his evolving game there are areas that need attention. “I feel I need to get better at breaking down defenders off the dribble in the half court set, explains, Martinez. “This would take my game to another level.”
This weekend Martinez will be taking an official visit to UTEP. They are the first school to offer him and it will be interesting to see how many schools will be jumping on board during the regular season.
