Prospect Spotlight: Cameron McDonogh (2018)
St. Xavier senior guard Cameron McDonogh (pictured right) has been picking up small college interest here recently, and is ready to help his team make a push to win the 7th Region championship.
Last season McDonogh was a part of a St. Xavier team that finished the season 19-12, falling just short of a 26th District championship. “Our season last year, for me, was not as I expected. We weren’t able to accomplish a few of our team goals, and for me personally, I don’t think I played to my full potential,” said McDonogh of his junior campaign.
Cameron is a two-guard who can also play the point when needed. “I prefer off the ball because I like coming off screens looking to shoot. I am a solid shooter who can handle the ball and distribute to others. I am competitive and I’m not scared to go at anyone or sit down and lock somebody up.”
McDonogh hadn’t planned on playing AAU this summer, instead, he thought he would just work on his game and get some skill development training. But that changed. “I was asked to play for a few teams. I ended up playing for the X-Men for two tournaments and the Derby City Process for one tournament. The tournaments I played in, I felt like I played well, shooting the ball at a high rate, distributing the ball well, creating for other, and putting the ball in the basket.” Cameron has been working on his decision making with the ball and making his shot more consistent than it was last year.
Receiving recent interest from NCAA D-III Franklin College (IN), McDonogh hopes to find a school this is supportive of him as a student and a player. And as for his senior season goals, the hope is to help lead St. Xavier to Rupp Arena and make a run in the state tournament.
