Prospect Highlight 2019: KJ Holton
KJ Holton, 6’1″, PG, 2019. DeMatha Stags HS. Hyattsville, MD.
Grassroots Team: District Basketball Club
KJ moves up to the DeMatha varsity for 2017/18 after am excellent JV season last season. He looked very sharp in the DMV Elite 80 Showcase this September in Bowie, MD. Additionally, KJ played very well this summer in the DeMatha BSN Summer League & playing for the District Basketball Club. DeMatha is one of the deepest teams in the DC/DMV & in our tier 1 top 5 teams all of whom we believe have the talent & Coaching to be ranked in the nations top 25. DeMatha’s roster is stacked with great players 7 the Stags guards have tremendous depth, perhaps in the entire DMV. 2018 CG Justin Gielen started in the latter part of last season when Justin Moore was injured & did a phenomenal job. 6’6″ 2019 WG Carsten Kolegnik & 6’5.5″ 2019 WG Bobby Carson look fantastic this preseason & in our opinion have developed into solid D1 prospects. 6’3.5″ 2019 CG Justin Moore has 5 star potential once he fully recovers from his knee injury which could be in the near future. 6’1″ 2019 CG Jahmir Young is a D1 prospect & 2019 6’2″ PG Josh Wallace looks like a D1 player early in the season. 6’4″ athletic WG Deven Richmond has only played organized basketball since the 8th grade, but could breakout this season as D1 recruit after a very strong summer. This season KJ could be in the rotation as a backup PG, but we will know by late November when Head Coach Mike Jones figures out this years rotation. While we may not know the Stags 2 deep, we do know that KJ & his teammates posses great fundamentals & receive great structure at DeMatha.
Without a question KJ is a scholarship basketball player & we will be scouting him in much more depth thru the preseason & the entire season thru the WCAC Playoffs, The Washington, DC State Championships & The Alahambra Catholic Invitational Tournament which will conclude DeMatha’s 2017/18 season. KJ is a true PG with an excellent handle, IQ & court vision. His top priority is to facilitate & run DeMatha’s offense with ball movement & spacing. KJ can beat his defender off the dribble in the full court & break down the opposition in the half court with an assortment of quick ball handling moves. KJ utilizes a hesitation & go, between the legs crossover, an in & out crossover & regular heavy. He reads the defense very well & KJ can make all the passes from any angle on the court. As a scorer, KJ can score from all 3 levels, but he excels in his mid range pull-ups & floaters at the rim.
On defense KJ has shown to be very tough defender with very good lateral movement & footwork. KJ works on his game 6 days a week which includes strength & conditioning , plyos, explosion, flexibility & basketball drills. He credits much of improvement to DeMatha Strength & Conditioning Coach Toby. In down down time KJ likes to study Steph Curry, Kawhi Leonard & James Harden of the NBA.
In the classroom KJ maintains an excellent 3.2 GPA & he is very interested in majoring in Broadcast Journalism in college. He names his parents & older sister as role models in addition to the DeMatha Coaching Staff. We will be covering DeMatha & their players in depth this season with live game reports & player articles. We look forward to following KJ’s development this preseason & season.
