PrepHoops Top 250: 5 C/O ’20 “BIGS” That Stood Out
There was quite a bit of talent put on display Saturday, the 23rd at Michigan’s 2017 PrepHoops Top 250! Players of all ages showed up and showed out, proving themselves worthy of recognition and of a future spot on a college roster. Below are just a few class of 2020 players from the Frosh/Soph session that I think could be some of the state’s next ups, especially since their age leaves lots of time for even further growth and skill enhancement in the future! This list includes “bigs,” guys that are a head or more taller than their peers and tend to play on the inside. However, with the evolution of the game and the skill sets of these players in particular, you could find a lot of these guys contributing from anywhere on the floor!
Connor Bush – 6’5 – Belleville High School
Bush is a guy projected to go D1, and I definitely agree he has the potential! The kid is only a sophomore now and is already a freak athlete and huge presence on the court with skill in a lot of areas. At the expo, he put on display his athleticism and strength with some difficult layups and powerful dunks. He even threw one down over a defender right in front of me! I didn’t see him shoot much, but he did attack the rim off the dribble and get himself to the line. It’s certain he has the body and build and knows how to use them; if he puts some effort into fine-tuning his skills he will be an asset to ANY team!
Daniel Delmotte – 6’5 – Marshall High School
Probably the “truest big man” on this list, Daniel did most of his work on the inside. He is a long defender who can get rebounds and make scoring difficult. He can also finish pretty well in the post. The best play I saw him make was a baseline drive from the right into a spin-move and a left-hand finish at the other side of the rim. Moves and finishes like this combine with his size to make me very eager to see how he develops!
Nicholas Edington – 6’6 – Pickford High School
Edington is definitely an interesting player. According to Maxpreps, as a freshman at Pickford High he averaged 11.9 points and 8.1 rebounds, second on his team in both categories only to his older brother Derrick (Class of 2017). He also is a dual-sport athlete, playing tight end and defensive end for the Pickford football program. Though he played mainly on the inside during the game section of the Top 250 event, he proved in drills that he could get out and hit the three which is huge for a guy of his age and stature. He also showed a willingness and ability to grab rebounds, decent coordination (especially for a tall, young guy), and that he can post up.
LaTavius Vaughter – 6’4 – Clio High School
Vaughter is another guy that impresses on sight because of his stature. Last year he was listed at 6’3, but I’m almost certain he’s grown. He showed his athleticism with some dunks and easy finishes on the inside, and, like Delmotte, he used his length on the defensive end to bother people and contest shots. He also showed he’s capable of driving and finishing at the rim off the dribble.
Isaac Warning – 6’4 – Kenowa Hills High School
I think Warning could develop into an extremely valuable and versatile player. Despite his height, he brought the ball up the court several times and showed he could do so and distribute sufficiently well. He also attacked the rim, finishing with a nice, soft touch and using his body as protection. I didn’t see him shoot much, but if he added a good shot to his game he could be a valuable “three” player on the wing. I could also see him growing more and becoming a versatile PF or honing his guard-like skills and becoming a “point forward.” There’s so many different directions this guy could go!
