2019 Standouts
Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills HS)
PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Whether it’s protecting the rim, rebounding in traffic, or exhibiting one of his nifty finishes in the paint, Okongwu is a well-rounded player. He has the ability to knock in deep jump shots as well and his hands are magnetic. Continuing to improve his inside-out skills and filling the lane (sprinting) in transition will take his game to another level.
Isaiah Pope (Orange/ Orange Lutheran)
PG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Pope is a combination guard who is equally effective as a scorer and passer. He has great size for the 1 as he can see over the defense and his assertiveness and strength have improved immensely since the spring. As he improves his ability to break down defenders (change speeds/1st step), his stock will surely rise.
Dylan Cabs (Lakewood/ Mayfair)
WF, 6-foot-5, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: 2020 Josh Christopher gets most of the notoriety at Mayfair, but Cabs is the glue that keeps the team running on all cylinders. The multi-skilled lefty affects the game with his facilitating skills and shooting touch. He can knock down mid-range jump shot and his range extends out to the 3-point stripe. With his evolving skill set and overall savvy for the game, Cabs is projecting well for the next level as a point forward-type.
Jaime Jaquez Jr. (Camarillo HS)
WF, 6-foot-6, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jaquez Jr. is a born scorer. He is at his best while operating in the mid-range area where he shows the ability to break down defenders off the dribble for the mid-range pull-up. He has the strength and bounce to get to the rim off the dribble, but making his teammates better with the pass will take his game to another level.
Regean “Boogie” Ellis (San Diego/Mission Bay)
PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ellis stands out due to his explosiveness off the dribble and ability to knock in deep jump shots (great lift). His frame is filling out and he is showing the ability to carry defenders on his hip while attacking. He has a tendency to leave his feet while passing and needs to improve his off hand (left) while attacking/finishing, but the vision and overall athletic package projects well to the Division 1 level.
