This pre season we have stopped by Gonzaga HS 3 times & this Thursday where we chatted with Gonzaga HS Assistant Coach Hill at length. We greatly appreciate his time & analysis in addition to Head Coach Stephen Turner, Assistant Coach Devin Williams & Assistant Coach Roger Garfield. We are very familiar with Gonzaga who won the WCAC Championship, Washington DC State Championship, The Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament & Alhambra Tournament in Frostburg, MD culminating the Eagles fantastic 2016/17 season. We were in attendance in all these events & picked Gonzaga last December to win the WCAC. At the conclusion of the high school season this past April, Max Preps ranked Gonzaga #8 in the nation in their final poll.

The Eagles lose 3 starters from last year which are: All Met Player of the Year PG Chris Lykes (ranked nationally in the top 65) who is attending the University of Miami, 6’5″ Eddie Scott who is attending Penn & Michael Meyers now attending Williams College in MA. A casual observer could easily conclude Gonzaga will not be as good as last season, but in our opinion Gonzaga could be better. Here is why: 6’3″ CG Prentiss Hubb returns for his senior year & the Notre Dame commit is ranked in the top 50 to 90 range & Prep Hoops ranks at #50, with potential to move up. Senior 6’5″ Wing Myles Dread is committed to Penn State & ranked @ #179 by Prep Hoops. We consider Myles one for the most underrated recruits in the nation. 6’7″ 2020 forward Terrence Williams will start on the front line and he is ranked as high as #7 in the nation for 2020. 6’5″ 2019 Wing Anwar Gill is poised for a breakout season. 6’7″ 2020 Wing Myles Stute will in all probability break into the to the top 100 rankings this season & continue to move up during his career. All 5 players are legitimate high D1 major recruits. Other potential starters include Josh Watts, Allin Blunt with Chuck Harris & senior Will Turgeon is set to play in the Eagle rotation. All 4 of these players have made great strides in their basketball development this off-season forming a 9 deep player rotation for the Eagles. The Gonzaga team & players already know their identity & roles this season. With great team chemistry & players, we believe Gonzaga will repeat as a top 25 nationally ranked team at the conclusion of the 2017/18 season, despite having a bulls eye on their back.
What makes Gonzaga potentially better than last seasons great team ? 1. Height, The Eagles will field a taller top 9 than last season 2. Emergence of Sophomores Terrance Williams & Myles Stute. 3. Anwar Gill will blow up this season 4. More shooters than last season 5. Greater depth in addition to the development of Allin Blunt, Josh Watts, Chuck Harris & Will Turgeon. 6. Gonzaga could start 5 D1 high majors. 7. The Eagles will suit up 3 brother combinations on their varsity roster this season who a very close to one another.
Gonzaga College Eagles 2017 /18 Starters:
Myles Dread, 6’5″, WG/WF, 2018. Grassroots Team: Team Takeover. Committed to : Penn State University
This summer Myles played superb basketball for Team Takeover who won the Fab 48 National Tournament in Las Vegas. He is one of the toughest players in the DMV, a winner & a great team player, but there is much more. Last season Myles played inside and battled players much greater in height, some at 6’11” & defended them very well. He rebounded at a high level & played bully ball in the paint where he could score by overpowering the opposition. Myles proved to be an excellent perimeter shooter, transition player & posses a high level mid range game. His IQ, court vision & intangibles are off the charts. Myles will get the 50/50 balls, set great picks, & whatever it takes to win. Last season we awarded Myles to our 2nd Team All DMV, while Prentiss Hubb & Chris Lykes were named to our 1s team & Eddie Scott to the 4th team. This coming season Myles will play on the wing as a 2 & 3. This summer he perfected his jumper from all areas of the court & it is lethal from beyond the 3 point line. Myles is poised for big year & is superbly conditioned with a chiselled physique. Myles could very well move up from his # 175 player ranking for 2018. In our opinion Myles will be an impact player for Penn State very early in his career for the Nittany Lions.
Prentiss Hubb, 6’3″, CG, 2018. Grassroots Team : DC Premier Committed to : Notre Dame University
While Prentiss is ranked in the top 70 in most 2018 national rankings, we place Prentiss @ #50 which is more accurate. His passing skills, defense and transition game are elite. Prentiss can score very well from all 3 levels, but he is very unselfish & looks to get his teammates involved. He is an excellent ball mover & his ball handling skills are excellent. Prentiss is more than capable of running the Eagles offense at PG & he is very effective on & off the ball. He breaks down his defenders with great efficiency off the dribble & can finish at the rim with an array of moves. His athleticism & explosion are very underrated. We awarded Prentiss to our Doctors of Dunk this fall because of his explosiveness, high elevation & tomahawk dunks he throws down. In one game last season rose up for a dunk with his head at rim level but he got fouled on his dunk attempt. Prentiss is one of the best transition players in the DC/MD & DMV & utilizes his elite on dribble speed, quickness, acceleration & explosion to get to the rim for a FG or great pass. In last seasons finals of the Alhambra ACIT Tournament in Frostburg, MD, Prentiss scored 13 points in a key 4 minute span during the 4th quarter breaking open a close game. His scoring outburst clinched Gonzaga’s win over an outstanding Mt. St. Joseph team from Baltimore, who play in the BCL. Great players deliver in crunch time in big games with clutch plays. Prentiss is this type of player & he will continue to play great in key games this year & during his career at Notre Dame, in addition to providing excellent consistency in every outing.
Terrance Williams, 6’7″, F, 2020. Grassroots Team: Team Takeover
Last season Terrance got significant playing time as a true freshmen. His poise was unbelievable for such a young player. In the second half of the year, we (I) predicted Terrance would become a 5 star player in the near future, but more importantly in his senior season. In some 2020 rankings he is ranked in the top 10 nationally, but we believe he can maintain a 5 star national ranking thru the conclusion of his senior year. Last season and this summer, Terrance proved he can play inside out at a very high level. He is very crafty in the paint & scores very well down low. Terrence’s range is beyond the 3 point line & he is now able to score after quick 1 to 3 dribble moves. He has gotten stronger, and like all the Gonzaga players is very lean. Very recently, Terrance has grown to a legitimate 6’7″ & has potential to reach 6’9″. However, at his current height Terrance is tall enough to excel in college where he projects to play @ WF. He is a very & consistent player who will prove he can play in big moments & big games this season. Terrance is a D1 high major.
Anwar Gill, 6’5″, W, 2019. Grassroots Team : DC Blue Devils
Last January we (I) predicted Anwar would become a D1 high major college prospect. During the season he proved to be an elite defender & transition player. Anwar plays with an edge & toughness Coaches cherish. He was on the brink of breaking out in his sophomore year, but unfortunately broke his 5th metatarsal bone in his foot on 2-17-17. One week later he had season ending surgery in which a screw was inserted for reinforcement & for 2.5 months Anwar was not allowed to put any weight on his foot. At the DeMatha BSN Summer League, Anwar began playing just 5 days after receiving Doctors clearance. He was very effective in every outing including his 1st & each game he would pick up momentum. He regained his form & conditioning in an amazing time frame. Anwar played at such a high level, he was named to the 1st Team DeMatha Summer League All Star Team. In August & September Anwar made such great strides his Coaches have told us that Anwar is D1 high major & a lock to start. This preseason Anwar has grown to 6’5″ & looks fantastic. His 3 point & perimeter shooting are on the brink of becoming very solid in addition to his ball handling. He is a ferocious defender & rebounder with a very long wingspan in addition to being an excellent athlete. We will be updating Anwar with a new report this October. We predict in the near future Anwar will crack the top 200 2019 national class rankings & begin his climb up the charts. Next week Anwar will be awarded & named to our Doctors of Dunk Team.
Possible Starters
Myles Stute, 6’7″, WG, WF, 2020. Grassroots Team : Team Takeover
If Myles does not start early this season, he will receive major minutes. Last season Myles played on the varsity as a true freshmen & his huge upside was very evident in limited minutes. He made a major statement in early spring showcases with outstanding performances. Since then Myles has taken his game to the next level & in our opinion he will become a top 50 nationally player for the 2020 class within the next year. Myles has grown to 6’7″ & it appears he he could grow more. He is super explosive & was awarded to our Doctors of Dunk Team recently. Myles is a knockdown shooter & his shot off the dribble is very good & on continual development. This spring we projected Myles as WG at the next level, but he could become a WG/SF if he continues to grow in height. He has the potential to play & guard up to 3 positions this season, but we like him best at the 2 & 3. He can score well from the mid-range & transition & his ability to attack the rim off the dribble is improving. Myles is great athlete with a very long wingspan who could be become an excellent defender. Myles has a very high IQ & is a very good passer. Currently, Gonzaga’s 5th starter is not known & the finalists are Myles, Allin Blunt & Josh Watts. It will come down to who plays best with the other 4 known starters & which player which will create the best chemistry in the starting 5.
Allin Blunt, 6’7″, 2018. Grassroots Team : MD 3D
Allin enjoyed a very successful summer after slimming down & improving his conditioning & footwork. He is a very versatile forward who can play & defend multiple positions. Allin plays with a high motor & IQ with excellent movement off the ball & passing skills. He can knock down perimeter & mid range shots, but sets the tone with his defense & intangibles. This fall we noticed Allin has grown since the summer & he still could be going up. Allin is blessed with a very long wingspan & he is in excellent physical condition, with a strong & lean frame. He has the potential to start this season, & we expect his recruiting to pick up. Currently, Allin is receiving interest from D1, D2 & D3 schools. He is very intriguing & Allin still has a lot of upside in addition to being a high character young man. We believe Allin will develop into a D1 prospect this season sooner than later.
Josh Watts. 6’5″, W, 2019. Grassroots Team : Team Takeover
Josh has improved tremendously this summer thru his hard work & dedication. He is superbly conditioned & has grown to 6’5″. Josh has gained great confidence with his ability to score from all 3 levels. He plays with a high motor, IQ & defends very well at multiple positions. Josh has developed into a very good athlete with sneaky explosiveness & performs all the intangibles. His ball handling keeps improving & he is a D1 recruit with excellent academics & Ivy League offers. Josh will either start this season or play extended minutes. Already an excellent player, he still has upside, & we firmly believe Josh will reach it.
Rotation Players:
Chuck Harris, 6’2″, PG, 2020. Grassroots Team: Team Takeover
Chuck will be a very valuable rotation player after playing varsity last season as a freshmen. He looks poised to become the Eagles starting PG for his junior & senior seasons. Chuck is a true PG who gives the Eagles a lot of versatility with potential line ups such as allowing Prentiss Hubb to play off the ball. He is very skilled, fundamentally sound & a reliable floor general. He plays with a high IQ & excellent court vision. Chuck makes his teammates better & is a winner. He can score from all 3 levels with the ability to knock down 3s & finish at he rim thru contact. He is a very good defender, plays tough & performs all the intangibles. Since June Chuck has grown to 6’2.5″ & he has filled into his body very well. He is a D1 recruit who keeps improving & shows us something new each time we watch Chuck play. He is more than capable of starting some games this season.
Will Turgeon, 6’2.5″, WG, 2018. Grassroots Team
Will is knockdown shooter, ball mover & plays with a very high IQ. He has improved since last season & will be in the rotation this season. Will is a great teammate & an excellent student of basketball & in the classroom. Will has the skills to play in college and we will provide a Recruiting Report for him this month. Will’s father knows basketball at an exceptional level & we will tell you the identity of his father who is a great man in our Recruiting Report for Will this week.
More key Gonzaga players:
Anthony Blunt, 6’2″, WG, 2019.
Anthony has overcome some injuries during his career at Gonzaga. He is healthy & Anthony has been, very very impressive this fall. He is explosive & can knock down shots. Anthony has very big upside & we will be providing a brother combination article for Anthony & Allin Blunt very soon.
Malcolm Dread, 6’4″ W, 2021.
Malcolm is Myles younger brother & we (I) predict he will become a D1 player with high major potential. He looks fantastic this fall & Malcolm will play varsity this season. We will be providing an article for the brother combination of Myles & Malcolm Dread in the next week.
Carlos Hubb, 6’1″, CG, 2020. Grassroots Team:
Carlos had an excellent summer. He is a very skilled guard who can play on and off the ball. He defends very well & can make plays for others. He has proven in summer league & grassroots play he can make key plays & hit clutch shots. Carlos performs all the intangibles & is a great teammate. Prentiss is his older brother & Gonzaga will have 3 brother combinations on their varsity roster this season. We will be writing an article for Carlos & Prentiss in the next 2 weeks or sooner.
Austin Smith, 5’10”, G, 2021.
Austin impressed us at the DMV Elite Freshmen Showcase & in the Gonzaga fall pick up games. He could play varsity this season or potentially move up from the JV. In the next 2 weeks we will writing a Freshmen to watch article for Austin. He looks like a great prospect.
Conclusion : The WCAC is loaded this coming season with DeMatha, Gonzaga, Paul VI, & St. Johns all capable of winning the WCAC & being ranked in the top 25 teams nationally. St. Mary Ryken & Bishop O’Connell are very dangerous with potential of defeating any team in the WCAC. Bishop Ireton is solid with Archbishop Carroll & Good Counsel much improved. Bishop McNamara is rebuilding after losing nationally ranked 2019 players Mahki & Mahkel Mitchell (both brothers are committed to Maryland) to Montverde Prep & Jonathon McGriff to Huntington Prep, but the Mustangs do have some very good players.
*The DMV takes great pride in the WCAC who teach great academics, play with great sportsmanship & class, field great teams & Coaches. The WCAC develops students & athletes for life.
