The Basketball Interview: Bryce Washington
Southfield Christian guard Bryce Washington is one of the best players still available in Michigan for the class of 2018. As a junior, Washington averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds per game. I had a chance to ask him some questions about his game, recruiting and the upcoming season.
What would you say are your biggest strengths that allow you to be the type of player you are?
“I’m blessed with speed, athleticism, and length, which all help me on offense and defense. I’m also transitioning from being a good to a great shooter.”
What are some things you are still trying to work on?
“I’m currently working on pick and roll reads. I’d like to become the kind of player that can get a triple double on any given night in college. I’m also working on becoming a defensive nightmare!”
Who is the toughest player you’ve had to guard/play against?
“Marvin Bagley is a really good player. He was probably the best player in the Nike EYBL last summer.”
What team not on your schedule would you most like to play?
“Clarkston is loaded with talented players I’ve played with or against in the past. I’d love to see how our speed matches up against their size. Although it’s going to be tough for anyone to beat them, we’re up for any challenge.”
What has been your favorite and least favorite part about the recruiting process?
“My favorite part is meeting a lot of cool coaches across the country. My least favorite part about the process is making a final decision.”
If you could play alongside one player in the country, who would it be and why?
“If I could play alongside one player in the country, it would be my favorite player – LeBron James.”
Which game are you looking forward to most this season?
“The state championship game. I want to graduate as a state champion, and I’m working hard every day to achieve that goal.”
Do you mold your game after anyone? Who? Why?
“I’m becoming a student of the game, and picking up different things from multiple players to create my own overall game. The consistency of my jump shot has seriously taken off, so that’s going to change my game going forward. I’m also working on using my speed to put pressure on the defense like John Wall and Russell Westbrook. Most importantly, I’m studying defensive styles of players like Patrick Beverly, Gary Payton, and Michael Jordan because defense wins championships.”
What is the toughest environment you’ve had to play in?
“Coach Baker often gets overseas professional players, G League players, current and former college players to compete against us in practices and open runs throughout the year. It’s really tough, and they play us hard because they don’t want to lose to high school players. The environment makes us better and tougher.”
Outside of basketball, what do you enjoy doing?
“I love cars, and I enjoy learning about and experiencing the ride of different exotic sports cars. I play video games to win, and I like to learn about different cultures around the world.”
