Recruiting Report: Sedrick Altman (2019)
Colony high school wing Sedrick Altman is one of the fastest rising prospects in all of Southern California.
The athletic, 6-foot-3 junior entered the spring and summer with no offers after a breakout high school season, and now heads into the fall with a Division I scholarship offer and plenty more interest.
Altman, whose first offer came by way of local Big West Conference school Cal State Fullerton, said he’s thankful for the Titans coaching staff believing in him, but he has plenty more work to do.
“For it to be my first one and it also being Division I, it was a blessing,” he told Prep Hoops So-Cal after a MVP performance in the 2019 Creme game at the Creme of the County. “I just have to keep working.”
2019 Colony High wing Sedrick Altman is receiving interest from schools from the Pac 12, Big West and WCC.Altman is well-known among the Southern California hoops scene as a lockdown perimeter defender and explosive finisher around the basket.
“It’s just within me,” he said of where his dedication to the defensive end stemmed from. “I thrive off of competition. I have to be better than everybody and in order to do that, they can’t score on me. My biggest strength is playing defense.”
As far as weaknesses go, or rather what he’s working on the most, the Inland Empire product had been focusing on offensive skill work all summer.
“I’m in the gym all day, everyday working on my jumper and ball handling,” Altman said. “I’m working on my pace. I can get to the basket whenever I want, but I need to up my basketball IQ and decision making.”
Altman is hoping his improved offensive skill set and confidence will help him lead Colony high school back to the CIF Southern Section championship.
Colony defeated Villa Park in the CIF-SS Division 2AA championship game last season, but will need some younger players to step up this year to make that return trip.
“We have to put work in and get our chemistry together,” Altman said. “We lost a lot of guys from last season, but we’re ready and we’re going to get all the way back to the championship.”
In addition to the offer from Cal State Fullerton, Altman notes interest from quite a few programs, including schools from the Pac-12, Big West and WCC.
“I’ve been hearing from a lot of schools,” Altman said. “USC, Cal State Northridge and Pepperdine and a lot of others like that.”
