Recruiting Report 2019: Fred Crowell
Fred Crowell 6’0″, PG, 2019. Dr. Henry Wise Pumas HS.Upper Marlboro, MD.
Grassroots Team: New World 16U
This will be Fred Crowell’s 1st season playing for Wise HS after transferring from nearby Crossland. Last year Fred averaged 18ppg, 6 assists & 4 steals for the Cavaliers as a sophomore. Head Wise Coach Rob Garner says Fred will be a go to player for the Pumas this season and adds,”Fred is an excellent ball handler and very crafty with great court vision. He is very quick & can score from all 3 levels in bunches. At this time Fred projects to be a D1/D2 recruit.” Fred enjoyed an excellent spring & summer playing for Wise in the DeMatha BSN Summer League, Maryland Team Games, and New World 16U who play on the Adidas Grassroots Circuit. We scouted Fred & Wise HS and he is an excellent PG & college prospect. This season he will play off the ball when he is playing with Sherwyn Devonish who we rate as the one of the most underrated PGs in the Washington, DC DMV. Sherwyn, Terrance Gibbons & Fred will be the Pumas go to players this season to combine with a 10 deep talented Wise HS team.
Recently we chatted with Fred and we asked him about his offensive strengths,”My overall PG skills such as ball-handling, controlling the pace of the game, court vision, basketball IQ & facilitating are strengths. I can beat full or half court on ball pressure off the dribble with my speed, dribbling skills & moves. On both sides of the ball I think one play ahead & I am always scanning the court to make the correct read & decision.”T his summer we saw Fred light up the scoreboard within the Wise team basketball concept. He is very athletic & can go coast to coast off the dribble for a score, make an alley oop or a pass for an assist. Fred adds,”I like playing both in transition & in our half court motion offensive where I can run the point or play off ball.” This summer we saw Fred score on all 3 levels & he adds,” I want to be a complete player with no real weaknesses. In the half court I like to dribble penetrate where I can kick the ball out, make a dump-off pass or finish at he rim with or without contact. My range is beyond the 3 point line where I can hit spot ups or off the dribble from both sides of the court. My mid range pull up game is very good, & I can convert floaters with either hand in the paint.” One of the many basketball traits we like about Fred is thee is no wasted motion in his game. He gets thru seams & openings very quickly while making one of his many dribble moves such as a crossover or between the leg dribble, both of which freezes his defender.
Fred is a very sneaky athlete who has excellent quickness & speed. We have seen him dunk in games & run down opponents defensively. On defense he stays low with very good lateral movement. Fred plays very tough on ball defense & he ia an excellent help side & close out defender. Fred adds,”My favorite basketball player is Alan Iverson. I study his offensive & defensive skills on NBA Hardwood Classics & You Tube trying to emulate him. I respect AI so much because he gave 110% effort on the court.”
Fred had great summer averaging approximately 16ppg, 4 assists & 3 steals for New Word 16U & he gets trained by Coach Taj. Fred works on strength & conditioning, flexibility, plyos & overall basketball skills. Fred says,” Since my high school season ended I see the court better. My ball handling & explosion has improved, but I am still working on them. After my daily workouts we run 5 on 5 scrimmages. While I am happy with my progress, I will always want to improve in basketball & off the court.” In the classroom Fred has a 2.7 GPA which he is determined to get over 3.0. In college he is interested in Sports Management & he has great support from his close knit family. Fred says,”My Mom, Dad & all of my family are all great role models. Additionally, all of my Grassroots & Wise Coaches mentor me on & off the court. VCU has expressed an interest in Fred & will watch him this season. We expect his recruitment to pick up this season to which Fred adds,”At Wise, we have a great chance to get back to the University of Maryland in the MD 4A State playoffs semis & this season capture a Championship. We are deep & our chemistry gets better each time out.”
