Prospect Spotlight: Justin Williams (2020)
Anaheim Canyon high school has a strong history of producing talented guards.
From the Anderson brothers – Jermie, Christopher and Nick – to Anthony and JoJo Ballestero, the Comanches have their own Orange County high school version of a “Point Guard U.”
The question now is who is Canyon’s next great guard and the answer may be in quick-developing sophomore Justin Williams.
Williams started for the Comanches last season, putting up respectable numbers, averaging 4.7 points and three rebounds a game.
Anaheim Canyon point guard Justin Williams has high level feel and finishing ability. He said that making there was a bit of a learning curve when it came to making the jump from middle school basketball to the varsity ranks.
“It was a great experience,” Williams told Prep Hoops So-Cal. “It was tough, though, because I had to play a little bit harder defense. It was a shock going from middle school to the high school level and it brought a lot of pressure.”
The class of 2020 floor general impressed onlookers at the West Coast Elite End of Summer camp, a basketball setting that he’s none too familiar with.
“I just used this camp to work on things that I’m not as strong with yet,” Williams said. “I was trying to take a lot of perimeter shots out there.”
One of Williams most intriguing attributes is his slithery ball-handling, quick first step and crafty finishing around the basket with either hand.
The rangy 6-foot-1, 165 pounder said that his finishing ability comes from endless work put in at his high school.
“I had to get stronger, finishing and handling, with my left hand and rebounding,” he said. “I’ve been working out with my friends and teammates on contested finishes.”
The next step in Williams game is his perimeter shooting both off the catch and off the dribble, and like everything else he does, he’s working hard to get his shot right.
“I’m always in the gym at Canyon working on my shot,” he said. “It’s been all about getting reps on the gun.”
One thing you won’t find Williams doing, though, is chirping on social media.
“I don’t have a Twitter account,” he said. “I try and stay away from all of that stuff.”
