Prospect Spotlight: Brandon Whitney (2020)
Alemany guard Brandon Whitney is out to prove that he belongs in the discussion when it comes to the top 2020 prospects in Southern California.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore doesn’t say much on the court, or off of it, really, but he see’s all the tweets and Instagram posts about his peers who he believes he’s just as good as, if not better than.
“Yeah I feel like I’m underrated,” Whitney told Prep Hoops So-Cal at the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic. “I don’t know why, I guess they just haven’t been looking at me. It really does fuel me to get better. It makes me work harder.”
The work Whitney has put in over the spring and summer with his BTI club team most definitely showed at Artesia high.
2020 Alemany guard Brandon Whitney proved he belongs in the conversation among the best sophomore prospects.Whitney displayed an impressive all-around floor game, complete with a poised approach to running an offense, the ability to carve his way into tight spaces with the dribble to create for himself or teammates and an improving 3-point jumper.
One of the biggest things Alemany coach Tray Meeks needs from his young point guard is more assertiveness on offense, even though his shooting guard, DJ McDonald, is one of the best shooters in Southern California.
“When DJ is hot you have to give it to him,” Whitney said. “But I do need to be more aggressive offensively.”
As far as personal development goes, Whitney is dialed in on improving his middle-game and tightening his handle.
“I’m really focusing on getting better with my pull up jumper,” he said. “I also need to work on my ball handling. My dribble skills are good, but that’s always something that can get better. I just have to keep working.”
Whitney’s recruitment is slow as of now, but if the game he showed at the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic is what he does with the Warriors this season, that will change quick.
“I haven’t heard from any schools so far,” Whitney noted, “but it’s still early.”
