Prospect Spotlight: (2020 Luke Haupt)
Mike Haupt was quite the ball player back in the day as he bagged the CIF San Diego Section POY back in 1984. He later took his game to University of San Diego before hitting the coaching ranks that would eventually land him at St. Augustine. Well it appears his son may be on the same path as well.
“My dad definitely has had a major impact on my game and approach” explains, Luke. “My IQ for the game and overall savvy I would definitely attribute it to my father.”
While watching Luke Haupt play his overall feel for the game stands out immediately. He is an astute passer, his head is always up monitoring the defense, and overall appears he appears to be a coach on the floor. He advances the ball in transition and in the half court set he sets up teammates on the block as well as on the perimeter.
Haupt is a multi-skilled player with a great feel for the game.An area that has improved for the 6-foot-5 lefty is his shooting. “I feel my shot has gotten more consistent, but it needs to continue to improve going forward to open up other aspects of my game” explains, the younger Haupt.
However, despite his progress the 2020 prospect knows his game needs to continue to expand for him to reach his goals. “I need to improve my quickness—beating defenders off the dribble and finishing in the mid-range area would definitely enhance my overall game.”
It’s early in the process, but Haupt has been to St. Mary’s for a team camp and he came away impressed by Head Coach Randy Bennett. “I’m willing to go anywhere as long as it’s a good fit.”
But college can wait for now as Haupt and his St. Augustine teammates including USC commit Taeshon Cherry and fast-rising sophomore Chibuzo Agbo have their sights on making a run at a CIF SS State Title game. “That game we won in the playoffs last season against Sierra Canyon taught us that if you have the right mindset, you can beat anyone.”
