It is not too often that I talk to a kid who is truly in love with the process of becoming a better player. Many may say that they are in love, but then their actions portray a totally different thought. But for Clark Montessori point guard Dshawnti Hawkins, this is not the case. During our interview, you could hear the energy in voice when talking about the areas he felt that he improved in the most. “I feel that I will be a much more efficient player this year,” Hawkins stated. “This summer I learned a lot about getting to my spots on the court. If I get to my spots on the court, with a more consistent jumper, I can be unstoppable next season,” the junior stated. But these are not the only areas where Mr. Hawkins plans on showing improvement this season.
While already possessing the athletic ability that coaches are looking for at the next level, Dshawnti also stated that he worked a lot on his floor game and overall basketball IQ. “I put a lot of work into becoming a better overall point guard this summer as well,” Hawkins stated. “Learning where my teammates like the ball on the floor and what they do best is something that I really worked on all summer.”
If Dshawnti can combine show improvement in his shooting consistency and overall IQ like he worked on during this summer he could have a very, very good junior season. Hawkins is already strong in the pick and roll game where he can use his quickness to get to the rim or can pull-up for the mid-range jumper. Once he gets better at the little things, the aspects that do not show up in the box score, Hawkins will truly take off. During our interview Hawkins stated that he had contact with Ball State and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
