Position Spotlight: 2018’s Top Wings
The Class of 2018 is deep with talented wings capable of knocking down perimeter jumpers or scoring at the basket. We take a look at the Top 12 wing players in the class.
1) Kyle Greeley 6’4 West Salem HS/Hoop Salem
Plenty has been written about the scorer from Salem who recently committed to play for Coach Barret Peery and Portland State. Part of a talented trio of wing players who are expected lead the Titans deep into the post season.
2) Immanuel Allen 6’3 Lakeridge HS/Portland Basketball Club
Physical athletic wing who possesses multiple D1 offers, made a splash this summer on the Nike EYBL circuit where his slashing and rebounding were on full display. Improving as a shooter would only serve to make him an even more dangerous offensive threat.
3) Jalen Thompson 6’3 West Linn HS/Elite 24
Arguably the best shooter in the state, Thompson will be entering his third season as a varsity player for the Lions. Despite his frame, Thompson also has proven to be a lock down defender on the perimeter.
4) Jay Elmore 6’0 South Eugene HS/Team Flight
If Thompson isn’t the best shooter in the class of 2018, then Elmore would hold the crown. His shooting was on full display this summer where he put up multiple games with 10+ made three pointers, including one against a loaded Seattle Rotary team. Elmore must prove the ability to defend elite guards to improve his chances of playing at the D2 (or higher) level.
5) Dalton Renne 6’7 Banks HS/Team Fly
One of the more unheralded prospects in the class, the multi sport Renne has a high ceiling due to his length and scoring ability. As he gains strength and consistency, look for his recruiting to pick up steam.
6) Jake Estep 6’4 Beaverton HS/Portland Basketball Club
A tremendous shooter, Estep carried Beaverton to the 6A state semifinals last season. The Beavers will rely on his improvement as a scorer and defender to compete in the Metro League this season.
7) Kiefer Edwards 6’5 Crater HS/Team Flight
Ultra bouncy scoring wing, active offensively and on the glass. Is effective using length to play passing lanes on defense. Becoming consistent shooting from range would expand his college options.
8) Bostyn Holt 6’5 Roosevelt HS/Portland Basketball Club
Emerging perimeter player with tremendous upside. Appears to be growing into his frame. High basketball IQ and good feel for the game. Look for him to have a breakout season this year for the Roughriders.
9) Matt Lang 6’2 Jesuit HS/Portland Basketball Club
Another on the short list of the best shooters in the state, the lefty has a great basketball IQ and a good feel for how to play off of his teammates to create space for his own shot.
10) Cole Turner 6’6 Clackamas HS/Elite 24
The biggest wing on our list, the physical Turner recently pledged his services as a wide receiver to the Nevada Wolfpack. On the floor, he uses his size and athleticism to stuff the stat sheets. One of the more versatile wings in the state, he’s active on the glass and in transition.
11) JR Schilling 6’5 Lake Oswego HS/Elite 24
One of the most improved players in Oregon from his sophomore year to now. Schilling has added the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim to his already lethal catch and shoot jumper.
12) Tyke Thompson 6’6 West Salem HS/The Hoop Salem
When Thompson is active and engaged, he plays like a Top 10 player in the class, uses his length and perimeter shooting ability to impact the game. Most show the ability to play at that level consistently, especially on the glass and defensive ends of the floor.
