Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp: Best Shooters
Camp Director Dinos Trigonis gathered many of the top freshmen and sophomores in the western United States for the two-day Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp at Cerritos College.
The event is the go-to affair for scouts and media if they want to see the best up-and-coming prospects and get a feel for the future of west coast basketball.
While there were plenty of “ranked,” “starred,” and “well-known” names in attendance, some players put their stamp on the event by dropping in shots from distance at a consistent clip.
Best Shooters
Brandon Angel, 2020, Torrey Pines
I’m fairly certain Angel made our list of best shooters at the Creme of the County earlier this month, and the 6-foot-4 wing continued his hot streak at the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp. It was probably helpful that Angel played a
Rancho Christian shooting guard Luke Turner was one of the best shooters at the Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp.longside a point guard – Jake Tawhiao – who was familiar with his game and a willing passer. That duo connected on countless drive-and-kick 3-pointers on the weekend.
Josh Christopher, 2020, Mayfair
Christopher was easily the camp MVP, even though he was one of four “MVP’s” selected, and that distinction has a lot to do with the way he shot it from the perimeter. The 6-foot-3 two-guard has always had a knack for making difficult shots, but he capitalized on the easy looks – transition and rhythm triples and mid-range jumpers – in his dominant weekend performance.
Sean Newman, Jr., 2020, Santa Monica
At around 5-feet-7 or 5-feet-8, Newman needs a quick trigger on his jumper and he definitely has it. The Santa Monica High guard was deadly from deep with his feet set and didn’t need much time to get his shot off. Newman showed a high understanding of how to work off the ball to get open, whether it was coming off of screens or dropping to the level of the ball handler to create the proper angle for a drive-and-kick.
Luke Turner, 2021, Rancho Christian
Turner has good size and length for a freshman, now combine that 6-foot-5 frame with a sweet shooting stroke from the 3-point and mid-range levels, and you have an intriguing long-term prospect. Turner was most effective spotting up from the top of the key or either corner and using his shot fake and baseline pull-up.
