Francisco’s Finest: Ron Massey Memorial (Top 2019s)
Although the location has changed a number of times, Dinos Trigonis’ Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic hasn’t changed a bit–in terms of luring most of the elite high school talent in So-Cal and Nevada (Bishop Gorman).
Frank Burlison will be breaking down the the best of the best from the Class of 2018 while Devin Ugland will be laying out the goods in the Classes of 2020 and 2021. My objective? Giving a thorough breakdown from the Class of 2019.
Francisco’s Finest: Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic
Class of 2019
Sedrick Hammond (Los Angeles/Cathedral)
PG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hammond, who is a transfer from Las Vegas, has taken his game to new heights. A season ago, he was viewed as an athletic guard who plays hard at both ends of the floor, especially on the defensive end. However, his offensive game has matured as well due to an improved scoring package and feel. Great frame, terrific off the dribble (going right), and an improved jump shooter.
Jarod Lucas (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos)
CG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: There are two aspects of the game you can depend on when playing with Lucas. He plays with great energy at both ends and when he gets his feet set (on balance) his jump shot is sweet. He gets great lift on his shot and his pull-up is deadly. While in transition his head is always up and he displayed the ability to snap passes to open shooters.
Max Agbonkpolo (Rancho Santa Margarita/Santa Margarita)
WF, 6-foot-7, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: It could be argued that Agbonkpolo is the most improved 2019 prospect in Orange County. The willowy wing-type had some eye-popping finishes in transition and his ball skills and shooting touch have evolved. He converted a number of buckets slashing his way to the rim and he also converted some jump shots as well.
Isaiah Mobley (Temecula/Rancho Christian)
PF, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mobley is a multi-skilled 4-man who can score in a variety of ways. He shows a soft touch inside-and-out and his hands are soft. He has the ball skills to lead the break and he has the savvy to find open teammates off the dribble. He doesn’t possess great lift, but he does have good timing and his arms are very long.
Gianni Hunt (Torrance, CA/ Bishop Montgomery)
PG, 6-foot-3, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: This slick left-handed point guard prospect pushes the ball exceptionally well and can get to the rim in a hurry. He is blessed with exceptional speed and quickness and he is tough to stop while attacking defenders. His jump shot has improved immensely since his sophomore campaign and he is quite the dump-off passer in the paint.
