Francisco’s Finest: Ron Massey Memorial (2019 shooters)
Cerritos, CA- The Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic has always been and continues to be one of the better stops on the Fall scouting tour. Dinos Trigonis continues to bring in the best teams and as a result the talent pool continues to impress.
In our first segment of Francisco’s Finest, we looked at the Top Performers in the Class of 2019. The next installment will be the best shooters we witnessed over the weekend.
Top 2019 Shooters
Jake Kyman (Rancho Santa Margarita/Santa Margarita)
WF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Kyman has one of the smoothest strokes in Southern California. He can hit deep 3-pointers, pull-ups in transition, and he can hit shots equally effective off the catch or off the bounce. When he does miss, it appears he fades a bit on his shot and that may be due to a lack of strength or fatigue. However, his smooth stroke also opens out his opportunities to get to the rim.
Chris Koon (San Pedro/Rolling HIlls Prep)
WF, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: This burly wing-type is the quintessential glue-type for his high school team as well as for the next level. He possesses a solid looking left-handed stroke and he always appears to be on balance. He also utilizes up-fakes to get defenders off balance and if he can’t get his shot off, his passing acumen is impressive.
Clay Donahue (Santa Ana/Mater Dei)
WF, 6-foot-6, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Donahue was one of the breakout performers at the West Coast Elite End of Summer event a couple of weeks back and he continued his impressive play here. He didn’t get as many opportunities with his high school team, but when he did, he came through. He has a feathery touch from the perimeter and his shot is nice and easy. Add his size into the equation and he projects well for some level of college basketball.
Josh Vasquez (Torrance/Bishop Montgomery)
2G, 6-foot-3, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: “Silent assassin” describes this up-and-coming 2-guard. His moxie and demeanor (never shows emotion) are two other important ingredients to this developing product. Vasquez has textbook jump shot with an impeccable release. He gets great lift on his shot and he’s always on balance.
Jarod Lucas (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos)
CG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: There are not too many kids that work as hard on their game as Lucas—and it shows. He can blitz up the court and stop on a dime and nail the pull-up jump shot. He gets nice lift on his shot and he always appears to be on balance. This should come as no surprise considering his father (Jeff), who played for Hawaii back in the day, was one of the elite shooters in his day.
