Francisco’s Finest: Creme of the County (Best PGs)
La Jolla, CA
Class of 2021
Brendan Perry (Carlsbad/ La Costa Canyon)
Joel’s Take: Savvy, ball skills, and moxie describe this up-and-coming combo-guard prospect. He showed dexterity while finishing with either hand off the dribble and he knocked in jump shots too.
Chris Howell (San Marcos)
Joel’s Take: There wasn’t a more gifted passer than Howell at the event. The game comes nice and easy to Howell and he possesses great length at 6-foot-5. His jump shot needs tightening as does his ball handling against pressure, but he is definitely a Division 1 prospect.
Hayden Gray (San Diego/Santa Fe Christian)
Joel’s Take: Gray was one of the more intriguing point guards at the event. The 5-foot-8 shooter was also one of the better passers in the event. His vision was very impressive, especially in the paint area.
A.J. Burgin (San Diego HS)
Joel’s Take: Although Burgin played off the ball most of the game, he did show some savvy by advancing he ball in transition to open shooters. His 3-point shot looks solid as well as he drained four of them. Improving his quickness and speed will help while attacking physical defenders.
Class of 2020
Yassine Gharran (San Diego/Foothill’s Christian)
Joel’s Take: There wasn’t a point guard in the gym that was a relentless as Gharran. The 6-foot-1ish guard attacked the basket at will, showed active hands on the defensive end, and knocked in the perimeter shot.
Class of 2019
Regean “Boogie” Ellis (San Diego/Mission Bay)
Joel’s Take: Ellis holds offers from a number of Mid-to-High Major level programs due to his offensive repertoire. He can nail deep 3-point shots, blow by his defender, and explode over the rim. He is a gifted passer, but his decision making and attention to detail on the defensive end need polishing.
Sedrick Altman (Ontario/Colony)
Joel’s Take: Arguably the the best all-around point guard at the event. His shot needs to continue to improve, but his physical tools cannot be denied. He has a slick crossover, can finish with either hand, and is very explosive. What separates him from his peers is his mindset on the defensive end.
Noah Tumblin (San Diego/Mira Mesa)
Joel’s Take: One of the biggest surprises of the day was the 6-foot-1ish Tumblin. The wiry combo-guard can slither his way to the rim and has an excellent burst off the dribble. His finishing skills are impressive and he also showed nice vision on some kick-out passes.
Class of 2018
Taurus Samuels (Vista HS)
Joel’s Take: Samuels, who is committed to Dartmouth has a mature game for his age. The 6-foot chiseled point guard can knock down the deep 3-point shot or attack his defender off the dribble. He needs to improve his burst and finishing skills in the paint area, but he’s a winner.
Alex Cho (La Jolla/La Jolla Country Day)
Joel’s Take: The 6-foot-1 burly lead guard is a bull in transition and he makes excellent decisions. He is the consummate coach on the floor who is a true point guard and leader, but can also convert a bucket when needed.
