Commitment Update: Kyle Greeley 2018 West Salem HS
After a break out July that saw him garner interest and offers from several west coast D1 programs, 2018 West Salem guard Kyle Greeley committed to Portland State and new coach Barret Peery while on his official visit this past weekend. We caught up with the talented scorer to find out why he decided to shut down his recruiting and pull the trigger on the Vikings.
When asked what drew him to Portland State, Greeley had a lengthy response: “I feel like the Big Sky Conference is a perfect fit for me. Portland State had everything that I was looking for. They are 45 minutes from home, so it’s far enough away to enjoy college, but still close enough for me to drive home to Salem for dinner and spend time with family. It’s really important to me that my friends and family get to be able to watch every home game during my career if they want to.” Relationships were also important for the #2 ranked player in our 2018 rankings. “I mainly chose PSU because of how important the coach made me feel. I’m the only guard he’s offered in the state and he really showed me how big of a priority I was. They put in the most effort out of all the colleges recruiting me.” Greeley chose the Vikings over offers from Southern Utah, Cal State Fullerton, Idaho, Leigh, and others.
Asked to explain how he sees his college career unfolding, Greeley replied; “I like the coaching staff at Portland State, they will push me on the court but they care about me off the floor just as much. On my visit, they really showed me how important the players are and how big of a “family” feel it is at PSU. I’m really close with Coach Peery, but also feel like I have a good relationship with all the coaches on the staff.” “Coach Peery made it clear how well I will fit in. They graduate two guards, which will give me an opportunity to come in and be an impact guy right away. I know that I’ll have to work hard, but I think I can contribute as a freshman, starting or coming off the bench in whatever role the coaches think will give us the best chance to win.”
As for the academic appeal of Portland State, the all stater offered: ” I’ll be studying business. It’s a broad degree that I can do a lot with. I’m not sure what I want to do for a career, but a lot of jobs will utilize a business degree. My goal is to play professional basketball, but at some point I’ll be done playing and need to use my degree. Plus Portland State just opened up a new business school building which should only make that program stronger.”
Prep Hoops Oregon Analysis:
We’ve long felt that Kyle Greeley was one of the more under rated players in the northwest. He just has a knack for putting the ball in the basket, a skill that seems to translate to the next level. It was clear early on that new Portland State coach Barret Peery has made recruiting local players a priority and signing Greeley as his first local high school guy will be a home run. Portland State beat out Big Sky Conference rivals Southern Utah and Idaho among others for Greeley’s services. Congrats to Greeley and the Vikings and we look forward to watching his career on the Park Blocks.
