West Coast Elite End of Summer Camp: Top Sleepers
Ryan Silver and his crew at newly-minted West Coast Elite put on some of the most well-run local camps in Southern California and the End of Summer showcase setting was no different.
The camp featured upwards of 200 prospects ranging from rising seniors to incoming freshman and from a variety of different levels of college potential.
In this piece, we take a look at the top sleeper prospects who made their way to El Camino College in Torrance on Sunday and have the potential to breakout this season.
Top Sleepers
Pharoh Allah (St. Genevieve)
Allah is relatively new to the area, relocating to Southern California from New Jersey. The 6-foot-4, class of 2018 wing is an explosive athlete who excels in a free-flowing, transition atmosphere. Allah attacks the basket with reckless abandon and finishes with authority above the rim. The rising senior had a handful of highlight reel dunks throughout the day and into the Top 40 showcase game.
David Cheatom (L.A. University)
Cheatom is emerging as a sleeper in the 2020 class due to his high motor and explosive athleticism at 6-feet-2. The Los Angeles City Section product is a do-it-all type of wing who excels as a slasher and finisher in transition. What stood out most on Sunday was his dedication to the defensive end and his activity on the offensive and defensive glass.
Lucas Holden (Anaheim Canyon)
Holden is a smooth and rangy left handed forward who can play both the three and four positions with his ability to shoot it from 3-point range and put it on the deck and get to the basket. The 6-foot-6 north Orange County product had a solid junior season at Canyon, putting up averages of 8.8 points and 6.3 rebounds a game, and we expect an uptick in production from Holden during his senior year.
Michael Ofoegbu, Jr. (Mayfair)
Ofoegbu is a long, fluid athlete at 6-feet-5 and does most of his damage when getting out wide, filling the lane on the break, and cutting to the rim where he can score with finesse or power finishes. One of the best aspects of the rising junior’s game is his perimeter defense. He uses his combination of lateral speed and length to guard and contain multiple positions, while his quick first step and instincts help him jump passing lanes for steals.
Kailen Rains (San Ysidro)
Rains is a smooth three level scorer with nice upside as a combo guard. He’s equally effective both on and off the ball and was efficient in all three games he played on the day. The 6-foot-2, class of 2020 prospect is difficult to keep in front due to his ability to change direction without losing speed.
Justin Williams (Anaheim Canyon)
What stood out most about Williams was his willingness to take on all challenges. The class of 2020 point guard made it a point to check the other team’s best perimeter player and took it personally when his opponent scored on him. The 6-foot-1 rising sophomore also impressed with his feel on the ball. He’s quick and shifty with a high basketball IQ and crafty finishing package around the rim. Williams also displayed high level passing ability.
