WCE End of Summer Camp: Top Shooting Guards
Ryan Silver and his crew at newly-minted West Coast Elite put on some of the most well-run local camps in Southern California and the End of Summer showcase setting was no different.
The camp featured upwards of 200 prospects ranging from rising seniors to incoming freshman and from a variety of different levels of college potential.
In this piece, we take a look at the top shooting guards who made their way to El Camino College in Torrance on Sunday.
Best Shooting Guards
Josh Christopher (Mayfair)
Christopher is one of the top-ranked players that the country has to offer in the 2020 class and showed flashes of why he’s earned that honor. The smooth scoring 6-foot-3 Mayfair High star struggled in his first game, forcing the issue a bit and settling for tough shots despite having a major advantage in size and athleticism. But Christopher bounced back in his second game, catching fire from deep, hitting 10 3-pointers from a variety of spots behind the 3-point line.
Sam Clareman (Brentwood)
Clareman’s shot is as true as it comes. He’s always square to the basket, on balance and has confidence in his mechanics, which allows him to get his shot off with time and space or with a defender closing out hard. The 6-foot-2 Brentwood High sharpshooter, who shot 38 percent from deep last season as a sophomore, was one of few players who understood how to play off the ball, using down screens and flare screens to get himself good looks.
DJ Davis (Corona Centennial)
Davis is one of those guys who you want to take the final shot in a close game. The 6-foot Corona Centennial sophomore has the ability to knock down shots on the move, off the bounce or just a plain old catch-and-shoot. Davis has unlimited range, a quick trigger and fundamental footwork which allows him to create space when needed.
Austin Galuppo (West Ranch)
Galuppo is typecast in the “streaky” category, but if he gets going he’s very difficult to stop. The class of 2018 West Ranch High product has a nice combination of size and athleticism for the position at 6-feet-4 with good downhill speed and leaping ability. Galuppo gets good lift on his jump shot, which helps negate the effects of his low release. The arc and rotation on his basketball are rivaled by few other shooters in the area.
Brendan Harrick (Esperanza)
Harrick was by far the most consistent 3-point shooter throughout the day from his two camp games and into the Top 20 showcase. Like many others on this list, the 6-foot-5 rising senior, who could also be on a top small forward list, has tremendous range and is true from multiple spots from behind the arc. An area where Harrick separates himself is in the mid-post. He has the ability to post up smaller defenders and finish around the basket or hit a fadeaway jumper.
