UC Irvine Elite Camp: Best Shooting Guards
Saturday’s UC Irvine Elite Camp was attended by 114 prospects of varying skill levels and projected collegiate ability.
Prep Hoops So-Cal was in attendance at the Bren Events Center and, in this piece, describes the five best shooting guards that made the trip to Orange County. The prospects are listed in alphabetical order.
Top 5 Shooting Guards
Chris Mitchell (Cathedral – 2018)
Mitchell is long and rangy with good athleticism and burst at the point of attack. The 6-foot-4 wing had a handful of highlight-worthy dunks and got to the basket at-will for finesse finishes. Mitchell was also consistent from the perimeter, knocking down catch and shoot 3-pointers while mixing in some mid-range pull-ups.
Evan Oliver (Citrus Hill – 2020)
Oliver is a high volume scorer at 5-feet-9 with a very good feel for the game. He’s a consistent shooter from 3-point range both off the catch and off the bounce. While he isn’t as athletically gifted as others you’ll find, Oliver is clever and crafty with the basketball which allows him to get to his spots.
Isaiah Pope (Orange Lutheran – 2019)
We’ve had plenty of coverage on Pope and the 6-foot-3 continues his steady improvement. One of the aspects Pope told us he’s working on is the catch-and-shoot 3-pointer and he made plenty of those Saturday. He repeats his shooting mechanics well and gets tight rotation on his basketball which makes for a soft touch on the rim. The rising junior also showed his improving ball skills as he works toward becoming more of a combo guard.
Ofure Ujadughele (Chino Hills – 2018)
Ujadughele is known as a high motor two-way player who locks down the other team’s best offensive player. The 6-foot-3 senior-to-be isn’t straying from that identity, but rather adding to it with vastly improved mechanics on his jump shot. Ujadughele gets great lift on his shot, and while he used to release it on the way down, he’s beginning to let it fly at the peak of his lift, which is helping his consistency.
Mason Westlake (JW North – 2018)
Westlake, who also plays volleyball at North, has amazing balance on his jump shot. The 6-foot sharpshooter gets his shot off whenever and wherever without needing much time or space. He knows how to work off the ball, rubbing his man off of down screens which frees him up for open looks.
