Recruiting Report: Jason Murphy (2019)
The game of basketball has become so centered around guard and perimeter-oriented play, that the typical post up big man has become almost extinct. The frontcourt players have had to adjust to this transition by becoming more versatile on both ends and being able to adopt guard tendencies into their own game. Chapelgate Christian Academy 2019 forward Jason Murphy can be categorized as one of these players.
Murphy was a force last season for the Yellowjackets last season compiling 20 double-doubles in 29 total games, which ranked best in the state. The 6-8 big man averaged 15 points, 11.2 rebounds and swatted away 3.5 shots per game throughout his sophomore campaign.
After his season with Chapelgate concluded, Murphy suited up for Team Melo 16U with a few things in mind in terms of improvement.
“I wanted to get stronger,” Murphy told PrepHoops. “Just really get in the gym and get plenty of shots up, work on my footwork and just my overall game. In June, I spent a lot of time in the weight room and on the court getting endless shots up. I feel like that really helped me come July and now that the AAU season is over, that’ll carry over into the high school regular season.”
The Yellowjackets struggled with a tough schedule last season finishing 14-17 overall, but Murphy is looking forward to changing that outcome in 2017-18.
“I think I can really make a huge statement this year being my eleventh grade year and build off last season. I feel like I can do some really great things,” Murphy explained.
I saw Murphy play this past weekend at the Pride of Maryland Team Camp and he was easily one of the standouts from the day. He was a force on the glass on both ends using his size. Murphy’s game is predicated working with the ball on the block, but he also comfortably knocked down 15-18 foot jumpers off pick-and-pop scenarios. He visited the line more than any other player at the camp and was extremely efficient in making his trips count.
The 3.5 student holds an offer from Old Dominion with interest from a number of other Division I programs. He recently took visits to Old Dominion, George Washington and will visit Saint Joseph’s on the 14th of this month.
What will a college program get with Murphy?
“A hard worker. A guy who wants to succeed as an individual and teammate,” Murphy claimed. “I feel like I can bring a lot to not only a basketball program, but also the school and community. Wherever I go is going to get 100 percent of me every day.”
