A physical big that continues to show the work ethic and focus with the strides he has taken in his offensive development. The handle is still a bit raw but he is doing a better job of taking straight driving angles to the rim with a decisive pace that has translated to better looks around the basket. His post footwork is improving, the touch around the rim has also gotten better– I just love that his motor never cuts off at either end of the floor. A true big willing to do the dirty work of screening, communicating on the back line, show-and-recover defensive stunts, and blocking out– his skill base and physical tools project to a physical big that can block shots, rebound, finish around the basket, and knock down C+S midrange looks at the rim.
A chiseled athlete with the combination of strength and quickness to guard 1-3 at his level, Brown impressed as a physical POA and help defender that blew up ball screens and forced some tough shots. On the ball, his handle has improved to drive past his matchup going either direction and he finished well around the rim throughout the contest. Liked that he played with some urgency with his pace but didn’t rush his reads on the ball, creating openings for his teammates but leading them to the spot with his passes or going into DHO’s when the offense stalled out. A high-level shooter, he showed nice touch in the paint as well as beyond the arc on both C+S and movement shooting opportunities. Unselfish players that play within themselves while giving max effort at both sides of the floor are one of the most valuable commodities in our game today and Brown looks to be trending in that direction.
Gordon shone through as the offensive bright spot for the Playmakers, using a tight handle to get to his spots to score from the midrange. Dynamic in transition and coming off of ball screens in the halfcourt, he is wired to score but also was willing to make the extra pass if the read was there. Scored it from all three levels in a defensive-minded game that VA Playmakers ended up winning by 7 over Northern Kings. Defensively, I thought he was solid on the ball but needs to become a louder communicator and keep his head on a swivel as a help defender to serve as an effective leader for his team.
“Big Honey” showed his usual blend of inside-out ability, knocking down perimeter shots while rebounding the ball extremely well from the guard position. He reads the shot trajectory well and is extremely physical in his box-outs to grab the rebound and stick the putback. Skill-wise he continues to evolve, hitting shots off the bounce from beyond the arc and from the midrange throughout the win over B Maze Elite. His handle has gotten smoother and he is changing directions at a much quicker speed with the ball. The foot speed, quickness, and bounce will need to improve for him to hit his ceiling as a prospect– because the ball skills are there–but the year-to-year developmental strides give a good deal of optimism that he will get there.
Nigel Arthur
Nigel Arthur
A big body whose ball skills are raw but you can see that he is putting the work in. His spin move on the block looked pretty fluid and whenever he missed around the rim he worked extremely hard to grab the rebound and put it back up again. Arthur ran the floor hard, communicated well, and took pride in taking care of the little things as a screener and physical defender. Possesses the raw tools and desire to potentially mold himself into a viable prospect.
