Recruiting Report: Jahmir Young (2019)
Jahmir Young, a class of 2019 guard from Bowie, Maryland, has decided to transfer from St. Mary’s Ryken to DeMatha. The rising junior, who had a breakout sophomore campaign, is coming off a very solid AAU campaign in which he played a key role for 16U Team Takeover.
“I am a pass first guard who likes to get my teammates involved. A crafty lefty with a quick first step, and can knock down shots from deep,” said Young of his overall game. “I believe most people don’t see how effective I am on the defensive end, and how much I take pride in defense.”
If you can’t defend, there’s almost no chance you will be able to play significant minutes at any level. Especially with , and at one of the top high schools in the country. Young is known to be a gym rat, and is constantly working to improve his weaknesses.
“I have tried to work on every aspect of my game but my most improvement would be getting stronger and consistency on my jump shot. I have also become a better leader. I believe I need to work on everything, but mostly still my consistency on my jump shot, and getting stronger,” Young explained. “I feel like AAU taught me all of the little things that people don’t usually pay attention too. Like talking on defense, and communicating with my teammates. Controlling the tempo of the game, and knowing when it is right to speed up or slow down the game.”
At DeMatha, Young anticipates having a significant role as a point guard, and a leader. He will be expected to put his teammates in the right position in order to be successful. The ultra competitive lead guard is not shy about his goals.
“My goals for the high school season are to grow as a player, compete, and win against the best competition in the conference, and win the WCAC Championship.”
Young has received two division one scholarship offers to date; from Hampton and Coppin State. Old Dominion, James Madison, Iowa, Rice, & Louisiana Tech are among the schools reportedly expressing interest. Don’t be surprised to see him pick up more interest and offers as he continues to work hard on his game. What can Young bring to a college program?
“A strong floor general who can distribute the ball, get my teammates involved, but also be able create for myself. I just want to win games.”
