Recruiting Report 2018: Daniel Dorsey
Daniel Dorsey, 6’3″ WG, 2108. Quince Orchard Cougars HS. Gaithersburg, MD.
Grassroots Team: Team MOCO Heat/Team Vito
Last year Daniel was the only underclassman to start on an excellent Quince Orchard team which finished @ 24-3 & advanced to the MD State 4A Finals vs Perry Hall HS losing a heart breaker in OT. Daniel averaged 10 ppg, 5 rpg & 3 assists for the Cougars last season & says, “Our highlight of the year was our 55-52 semifinals win vs Wise HS which was played at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland.” Going into the semifinals Wise was 21-0 and ranked nationally & #1 in the area by the Washington Post. Nobody gave QO a chance versus Wise. Our team credits our great Coach Foringer with a perfect game plan and having us believe we would win. In my mind I really thought we would win. Coach Foringer ran the North Carolina 4 corners offense to slow Wise down. We had a week to prepare, watched a lot of film, and ran scout teams. It is a game I will never forget.” Prep Hoops attended this game and it was one the best coached games we have seen, it is reminiscent of Villanova upsetting Patrick Ewing led Georgetown in the 1985 NCCA finals.
Daniel is the lone returning starter this season for QO in what could be a rebuilding year. Due to a lack of height Daniel once again will be needed to play forward. At the next level he will transition to WG and we firmly believe Daniel will. He can play multiple positions and he has a very lean, but very strong build at 200 pounds. Daniel has very nice shot mechanics from the outside and score at the rim. He is very consistent, does not make errors & has very high basketball IQ. Daniel adds. ” I can take my man off the dribble from the wing & finish at the basket thru contact. We run a flex offense and I like to hit shots off my flex cuts from 10-18 feet.”
On defense Daniel has shown us he is very solid defender & adds,” My man to man defense is very good & at QO we want to hedge thru screens. I am good rebounder & my stats should go up this coming year.”
This summer Daniel played very well for his Grassroots Team MOCO/Team Vito averaging 15 ppg & 8 assists. Additionally Daniel was named a MD Elite All Star & awarded Most Consistent Player in our 10 Best format for the All Star Game.
This spring and summer Daniel says he has improved, ” I have extended my range, my quickness & speed. My lateral movement is better in addition to my overall basketball skills. Also, I have learned to become more of vocal leader”.
Daniel possesses a huge passion for basketball & calls himself a gym rat.” I am always working on my game & for the remainder of the summer I am concentrating on ball handling & creating off the dribble. I run 6 days a week, and we do strength & conditioning 4 days a week at Quince Orchard. We mix in plyos & using the resistance band which have helped me a lot in power, speed, and quickness. Also, we will run a lot of pickups since summer league & grassroots seasons have concluded.”
This season Daniel looks forward to playing with his brother Nathan. We will be covering QO this year and in addition provide new Recruiting Reports & 10 best game articles.
In the classroom Daniel excels with an excellent 3.4 GPA. At this point in time he is undecided on what his major will be, just that he has very big goal to play basketball in college. We think Daniel can become a WG and could become a scholarship player. St. Marys College (MD), Weidner (PA) & Hood College of Maryland are very interested in Daniel. His role models include his parents, Coach Foringer. Lastly and of a huge importance to him, a very emotional Daniel adds, “My 7th grade Coach Griffin, who became a QO Coach Grifiin was very important in my life & an inspiration.” Sadly Coach Griffin passed away due to cancer, but was able to see QO win the MD State semifinals vs Wise HS. from his hospital bed. May Coach Griffin R.I.P.
