Recruiting Report 2018: Alex Sanson
Alex Sanson, 6’1″, PG, 2018. Walt Whitman Vikings HS. Bethesda, MD.
Grassroots Team: MD Elite 17U
Last season Alex averaged 15 points, 2 assists, 2 steals & 3 plus rebounds per game for Walt Whitman HS. The Vikings finished at 18-7 & Alex was awardedfirst team All Moco 4A/3A last year. He will team with 6’3″ senior Joey Squeri to form one of the top back courts in Montgomery County for the 2017/18 season. We believe Alex will earn All Montgomery Honors this season & Whitman will be in the thick of the MOCO 4A race.
We compare Alex’s style of play to Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic in all phases of basketball. Alex is an attacking player & very, very tough. One opposing Coach says,”He is tough as nails, very hard to guard & he will run thru a wall for a win. I hate playing against him but love watching him play.” His basketball IQ is one of the best in MOCO, “I think I make quick & good decisions & l have very good court vision. However, if I make a bad play I move on immediately to the next play & the same goes for a good play.”
While Alex uses his left hand to shoot, he is ambidextrous & a nightmare to guard & says, “I am very quick & hard to guard off the dribble in which I use both hands. I am a good inside out player, & I can attack the rim off the dribble converting from the right or left.” Since the season ended for Whitman, Alex has worked hard on his shooting which was already very soild. He possesses great shot mechanics & he can score the 3 ball from 30 feet. We like his quick high release, follow thru & his ability to get his shot off the dribble under heavy defensive pressure & in traffic. Last season Alex converted several long range buzzer beaters in addition to making many clutch plays for the Vikings.
Alex proves to be a very good on ball defender who can apply full court on ball pressure & is good for a few steals per game. He adds,”I pride myself on being an all around player including a defender. I have good lateral quickness and I am working out with my Trainer Anthony. I have gotten stronger, more explosive since April. I can dunk the ball & I am now up to 160 pounds, and my goal is to reach 170, with a very low body fat % & lean muscle. I can really feel a difference in my strength, vertical & explosion.”
In the classroom Alex maintains an excellent 3.4 GPA, and to date he is not sure what he wants to major in college. Alex credits his parents for being his role models & helping him on & off the court. Currently Alex has no offers, but this will change this season. Consulting with several Coaches, we agree Alex is D2 player, but could move up to low D1 mid major this season. We will be covering Alex & Whitman this season providing game reports in addition to new Recruiting Reports & updates for Alex & his teammates.
