Prospect Spotlight: Jack Davin (2019)
We are on the tail end of summer basketball and around the country, college prospects at all levels are working on their game and working toward earning an opportunity to play at the next level. Prep Hoops Kentucky puts the spotlight on prospects around the Bluegrass State.
Covington Catholic figures to contend for a return to Rupp Arena in March. In order for them to get there and make a push towards a championship, they’ll need to replace the scoring and versatility of 2017 graduate Cole VonHandorff. Jack Davin is a leading candidate to fill the void left by CVH. Davin is a 6’5 rising Junior wing who is picking up some early Division 1 interest after a solid 16u AAU campaign with Indiana Elite Central. Jack missed his sophomore season at Cov Cath due to injury and is anxious to get back on the court with his teammates. I recently caught up with Jack to discuss his AAU season and expectations for his Junior season.
2019 Covington Catholic Wing Jack DavinPHKY: Describe your game. What do you do best? What are you working to improve? Do you model your game after anyone?
JD: I’m a long athletic wing that can shoot the 3 and get to the rim and enjoy playing defense and making plays for my teammates. I’m working to improve my lateral quickness and ball handling . I try to model my game after Kevin Durant.
PHKY: Recap your AAU season. Were you happy with how you played?
JD: I played with Indiana Elite Central and we didn’t start the year out as well as we would have liked but we finished up July playing a lot better. I was happy with how I played.
PHKY: What colleges are showing interest or have offered?
JD: I’ve talked to coaches from Morehead State and Wright State and I’ve been invited to elite camp at NKU and Evansville.
PHKY: What are you looking for in a college?
JD: I’m looking for a good academic school where I can succeed on and off the court.
PHKY: What are your goals for the upcoming HS season?
JD: My goal is to be the best player I can for my team and get out of the region and hopefully win 4 games at Rupp Arena.
Covington Catholic should be the favorites to win the 9th region. With Davin, Iowa commit CJ Fredrick, 7 footer Jake Walter and several high quality role players, the Colonels will try to return to the KHSAA State Tournament for the first time since 2015. The ability of the Cov Cath to get back to Rupp will largely hinge on the variables of Davin and other secondary scoring options reaching their potential and playing their roles to perfection. With his size and ability, Davin is one to keep an eye on moving forward and should move up from his current #18 ranking in our 2019 rankings.
