Prospect Spotlight: Hunter Stevens (2018)
Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the history of Pulaski Southwestern’s program, Hunter Stevens hopes to continue bringing wins and excitement to the Warrior faithful. Last season, the now senior guard averaged 12 points and 3 rebounds, shooting over 42% from the field (42% from field goal range). With Mr. Basketball Peyton Gover now at Lindsey Wilson College, look for Hunter to carry on the torch.
“Last season was such a great year for us. I had the opportunity to help lead Southwestern to our best start in school history, starting out 13-0. We won the 47th district tournament (it’s first in 4 years) and I was named to the All-District team,” said Stevens about last year’s success. Southwestern led the Bluegrass State in scoring, averaging 82.4 points a game.
Next season’s goals remain the same for Stevens – win the district title and make it back-to-back. “I want to do whatever it takes to help Southwestern win. Our goals are to win back-to-back district titles and make it to the state tournament.”
This summer Stevens played with Charlotte Court, one of the state’s more successful “non-shoe company” AAU programs. “Summer ball for me was amazing. I feel like I had a really good summer and have been able to make huge strides in my game. From my mid-range jumpers to just knowing when to attack and when to pull up. I feel like I’ve matured a lot on and off the court and have became a complete player.”
In describing his game, Stevens had this to say: “I believe I can do it all really. The total package, I really just like to see what the defense gives me and go from there. I can shoot the 3 really well, led Southwestern in 3-point FG% last year. I can get to the basket if they over play me, as I have the speed to blow by people and now that I’ve added my mid-range game this summer, I can just attack what opening he the defense gives me. Whether it’s a 3, attacking the rim, or a pull up jumper I’ll just take what they give me and keep my teammates involved.”
In the classroom, Hunter realizes this is his senior year and the want finish strong is there. “I want to finish strong in the classroom and off the court. I feel like I’m a good student, but this year I’m going to strive to take everything up a notch in the classroom. Just be the best I can be at whatever I’m doing and have no regrets.”
Stevens hopes to find a school at the next level where he feels wanted. “A lot of times kids go places just to be going. I want to have a good relationship with the coaching staff and just feel like whatever school I attend truly wants me.”
Currently holding no offers, Stevens does have interest from Catawba University, Lindenwood University out of St. Louis, and Georgetown College, and Central Arkansas.
