Recruiting Report: Adam Kunkel (2018)
We are on the tail end of summer basketball and around the country, college prospects at all levels are working on their game and working toward earning an opportunity to play at the next level. Prep Hoops Kentucky puts the spotlight on prospects around the Bluegrass State.
Adam Kunkel is a 6’3 Combo Guard out of Cooper High School. Adam is coming off of an impressive summer playing for Twenty Two Vision on the Adidas Uprising Circuit. Currently ranked #9 by our PHKY staff, Kunkel is due for a bump after picking up about a dozen offers this spring and summer. Kunkel’s junior season saw him average 16.3 PPG and shoot over 41% from behind the 3 point line. His season ended as the State runner up to Bowling Green. I recently caught up with Adam to reflect on his summer and start looking ahead to his college commitment and senior season with the Cooper Jaguars.
PHKY: Recap the AAU season for me. Any particular game or tournament stand out?
AK: This AAU season overall was a success for me. I picked up a lot more offers and interest. My breakout game was probably against the Louisville Magic (at the All-In Hoopfest in Louisville).
PHKY: You obviously had a huge summer and picked up a ton of offers. Any particular schools stand out? Do you have a plan for narrowing your list?
AK: I just narrowed down my list. In no particular order, Wofford, Belmont, Lipscomb, NKU, Chattanooga and Indiana State are my final 6.
PHKY: What do you say to the critics that say “he’s just a shooter” and that you may not even be the best player in the 9th region?
AK: Criticism definitely motivates me. I don’t have anything to say to the critics. My play speaks for itself.
PHKY: After graduating (Bellarmine signee) Sean McNeil and (Indiana State football player) Dante Hendrix, are you prepared to step up and lead Cooper back to Rupp Arena?
AK: I’m definitely ready to lead Cooper back to Rupp. Dante and Sean prepared me for this. I look forward to being the team leader.
PHKY: What are your individual and/or team goals for your senior season?
AK: My goals for my team are to win the district, then win the region and then win a state championship. Nothing less.
Cooper certainly has a good chance to get back to Rupp Arena in March. To get there, they have to get through Iowa commit CJ Fredrick and his teammate Jake Walters with Covington Catholic. Cooper and Cov Cath split two meetings last season and will likely run into each other again with a trip to state tournament on the line.
