Get to know the top five in the Oklahoma 2020 Class
Prep Hoops released the Oklahoma 2020 Prospect Rankings with some fire power at the top of the class. This article breaks down the top five players with a deep analysis of each player.
1. Bryce Thompson Wing
Thompson thrives from beyond the three-point line with a quick catch and release. Over the summer he learned how to be effective without the ball in his hands using screens and good movement without the ball to get open. The long, lanky frame of Thompson is perfect for him to become a complete dominant Wing. What has people excited to watch him over the next three years is the cap of Thompson on the basketball court is not even close to being reached. Becoming stronger and improving his handle are two things that could push Thompson to an elite level. Thompson projects to the High Major Division I level.
2. Rondel Walker Point Guard
Walker used this summer to make sure people knew his name. Over the summer he picked up an offer from Oklahoma State. More offers are on their way with the way Walker plays at 6’2. He is Combo Guard that will likely end up at the Point Guard spot in college. Walker plays with a high basketball IQ. With the ball in his hands, Walker makes his teammates better around him. The versatility of Walker on offense to score at all three levels is what makes him hard to guard. The shiftiness as he drives to the basket adds to his offensive weapons. Walker needs to improve his jump shot and strength. Walker projects to the High Major Division I level.
3. Jameson Richardson Forward
Richardson is a long 6’7 skilled Forward with upside. He is a true stretch four with a jumper that can get hot in a hurry. At this point in his basketball career, Richardson has proved to be a good shooter with a great knack for rebounding the ball in the post. This summer Richardson got his first look at how he matched up on the national level. It was evident Richardson hit some early growing pains learning how to play against some of the top players in the country. The biggest things Richardson has to work on is being stronger on the block, more aggressive on offense and becoming more confident that he can dominate the game in the post. Richardson has a high basketball ceiling. Richardson projects to the High Major Division I level.
4. Dayten Holman Point Guard
Holman has one of the best feels for the game at the Point Guard position I have seen in my five years covering Oklahoma high school hoops. When running the offense, Holman scans the entire floor well finding the small opening in the defense and exploiting it. The length of Holman gives him an advantage on both ends of the floor at 6’5. Holman is very quick with great athleticism. As a Guard Holman is one of the best rebounders if not the best in the state regardless of Class. The area holding Holman back from entering the top three in Oklahoma is his jump shot. Holman is incredibly gifted at getting to the rim. If the jumper for Holman can become consistent by the time he graduates, look out the Divison I colleges will be coming after him strong. Holman projects to the Mid Major Division I level.
5. Trey Phipps Guard
Phipps and Thompson will battle from this point forward on who is the best shooter in Oklahoma. One thing is for sure, Phipps has a dead eye from behind the arc. He flourishes in catch and shoot opportunities. The game of Phipps is growing from just a spot up shooter to a prospect that can mix it up with a drive to the rim. It will be interesting to see if Phipps being an undersized guard gradually moves over to the Point Guard spot in his high school career. In the modern age of hoops where shooting is one of the most valuable skills, Phipps will be a prospect that finds a home at Divisions in I program. The biggest areas of Phipps game to improve is his ball handling and defense. Phipps projects to the Mid Major Division I level.
