Dual Threats: Under The Radar Standouts Pt. 1
Dual threat standouts are players that can be considered an issue for opposing teams on both sides of the floor. North Carolina has a ton of them that are flying under the radar. Rest assured that each player on this list will prove their worth in the upcoming season on both ends of the floor.
Donte Johnson – Greene Central High School – Class of 2019 – 6’5” 205 W
Every team needs a guy that can do everything on both ends of the floor. This lefty has great size, agility, strength and skill to play virtually every position at times. A great example of a dual threat, as he was a key piece to the Greene Central High School success without being the clear cut go to guy. He defends much larger post players well and does a great job staying in front of high level scoring wings. Offensively, he’s added range to his jump-shot, uses the head-fake well to get defenders off their feet before he attacks the rim. Must note, he’s a very underrated passing threat. Makes great extra passes setting up his teammates for several wide open jump shots each game.
Motravion Dunston – Weldon High School – Class of 2018 – 6’6” 180 W
Yet another lefty on this list. Dunston has flown way under the radar while putting together an impressive junior season this past year at Weldon High School. He’s a consistent double double threat. Does a great job using his quick leaping ability and long arms to corral rebounds. Uses his length well to deflect passes, block shots and bother shooters as well. Offensively, has deceptive quickness and blows by defenders when facing up. Very crafty inside around the basket and shows flashes that he’ll be able to slide over to the wing full time sooner than later.
Jaqwan Baylor – Bertie High School – Class of 2019 – 6’9” 200 C/PF
There is a ton of potential here. Baylor naturally has excellent timing on the defensive end when it comes to blocking shots and rebounding the ball. His size, timing and length alone should enable him to become a consistent double-double threat as a junior at Bertie. Athleticism is improving each time out and gets up and down the floor. In the post, he has a good habit of keeping the ball high and finishing over his opponents. Doesn’t try to do anything he’s not used to. Appears to be very coach-able. Intriguing big man prospect.
Mike Bowers – Kerr Vance Academy – Class of 2018 – 5’11” 165 PG
Over the course of the summer, many coaches who watched the Franklin County Bulls got quite a viewing as Bowers was a terror on both sides of the ball. He does a great job staying in front of his man and picking the ball away clean from even some of the best ball-handlers. Also a great defensive rebounder for a point guard of his size. His IQ, wiry strength and lower body strength enable him to be a threat on the glass from his position. Offensively, he’s shifty with the ball in his hands and gets where he wants with minimal dribbles. Loves to attack the rim and keeps his head up finding open players with great consistency.
