Program Overview
For the last decade, Wise HS has been a Maryland State 4A power making deep runs in the MD State playoffs. Current Head Coach Robert Garner was named HC in 2012/13 & in the following year the Pumas won the MD 4A State title finishing with a 24-2 record. Wise plays in the very tough Prince Georges Count 4A which produces many excellent college prospects & players.
Last season the Pumas finished @ 21-1 suffering their only loss in a heartbreaking 55-52 defeat to underdog Quince Orchard in Maryland State 4A semifinals. This was the last game for The Big 3, 6’6″ combo forward Darron Barnes, 6’3″ CG Michael Speight & 6’0″ PG Brent Ingram, all excellent players & young men. (Pictured #0 Brent) Darron had D1 offers from Radford, Maine, Towson State, Manhattan, High Point University & other major colleges showing major interest. He appeared to be headed to Massunutten Military, but has since decided to attend powerful Navarro Junior College in Texas. Michael held D1 offers from Towson, Sam Houston State, USC, Canisius, Winthrop and New Hampshire & will attend Waterbury Prep School in Connecticut this year.Brent signed with D2 power Wheeling Jesuit who plays in the Mountain East Conference in WV.
We will be following all 3 of these excellent players in addition to 6’1″ sharpshooting G Brandon Howell (pictured below #1 in green) who will play at Hood College in MD. Head Coach Rob Garner & his Pumas showed nothing but class after the loss to Quince Orchard (please see video below) & could find themselves at the U of MD again this spring in their bid for a MD State 4A Title. Wise is renown for their very tough players, fundamentally sound team basketball, athletic play, and Puma basketball pride. Coach Garner & his staff preach structure, fundamentals, 100% effort, & mentor their players on & off the court preparing them for college & life.
Some outsiders may take the simple approach & say this is a rebuilding year for Wise. We have seen Wise in the DeMatha BSN summer League and Maryland State games this summer where the Pumas lost in the finals & gave powerful St. Frances HS from Baltimore all they could handle. We believe the Pumas have the talent to get back to the University of Maryland & challenge for a State 4A Title along with their PG 4A rivals, Eleanor Roosevelt HS. Other teams in PG 4A that we know will be very good, include Bowie, Bladensburg & CH Flowers. We will be studying a more in depth analysis at Prince Georges County basketball this fall & write our analysis on other PG 4A, 3A, 2A & 1A teams.
Going into the DeMatha BSN Summer League, we did not know what to expect from The Pumas basketball team due to the loss of 4 starters. In the first game we saw Wise, very early into the game into the game we realized Wise will be a legitimate top tier DMV team. The 2017/18 Pumas are 10 plus deep & come at opponents in waves & are reloaded. We have chatted extensively with Head Coach Rob Garner this summer about his 2017/18 Pumas. He says, “I am very excited about our team the upcoming season. This is a very different team than in past years & we will be 2 deep playing 10 players each game. I am very optimistic & if we put in the work & stay motivated Wise can get back to the Maryland State Tournament at the University of Maryland. We must continue to put in the hard work & dedication our players put in this spring & summer. Our team must overcome many battles this preseason & season to reach the level of success we strive for. Our mindset will always to take one practice & game at time & learn from our experiences. At Wise we strive for winning preparation all year around, which includes our players academics, life off the court & our year long basketball commitment.”
GO TO PLAYERS:
Sherwynn Devonish, 6’0″, PG 2018.
Sherwynn is a high energy point guard who competes very hard, and brings tremendous energy to Wise. He is an extremely skilled lefty & very crafty with the ball who makes plays for others. Sherwynn is a very disruptive & pesky defender and a very active vocal leader. He is a speedy & quick play maker with a fantastic pull up shot & a very solid 3 point shooter. We agree with Coach Garner’s assessment that Sherwynn is a D1/D2 prospect.
Terrence Gibbons, 6’7″, F, 2018.
Terrence is a very athletic & powerful forward who can guard multiple positions. He posses a nice consistent facing the basket high post shot which now can extend to the 3 point line. Terrence possesses excellent rebounding skills & he is a D1/D2 recruit whom we predict will be the latter.
THE X-FACTORS:
Jordan is high IQ PG who excels at getting to the basket. He has nice mid range game & be looked upon as big time leader for the Pumas. At he collge level Jordan projects as D2/D3 player.
Keyshawn can really shoot the & is one of the Pumas best 3 point shooters. The super sophomore is a D1/D2 college recruit. Can really score the ball. One of the team’s best 3pt shooters.
SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTORS: & Strong presence on defense.
Kevin Chase, 6’7″, F, 2018.
Kevin has excellent footwork inside, and a ver nice mid range shot. He is a strong rebounder on both sides & a very good rim protector. Kevin projects to be D2 college prospect.
Casheus Covington, 6’1″, PG, 2020
Casheus possesses great poise & he plays with a very high IQ. With his excellent court vision he is a very, very good play-maker. Casheus has great upside & is currently is a D1/D2 or D3 recruit and a player to watch the next 3 years.
Gabriel Arnold, 6’4″, G, 2019.
Gabriel is a very solid all around player & possess a great wingspan & sneaky athleticism. He could be the Pumas best 3 point shooter & is a D2/D3 college prospect. (pictured below left #23)
We would like to give special mention to Assistant Basketball Coach Charles Pickard overseas the Pumas overall Strength & Conditioning. He does a great job with with Wise basketball & football teams who are always in tremendous condition. The Pumas could be the best public high school in Maryland for basketball & football combined. Last season Wise football won the Maryland 4A State Championship with a 14-0 record & #25 national ranking & once again will be loaded.
The Wise Pumas 2017 basketball graduates say.“The coaches do an amazing job of getting us ready for the next level. We have the best group of coaches in the Washington, DC DMV.” Wise HS 2016/7 basketball graduates.
