DMV Dark Horse Scoring Threats (Part 2)
In anticipation of the upcoming high school season, we will be taking a closer look at various teams and players throughout the DC Metro Area. In this edition we run down players who could find themselves among the leading scorers in the area this year.
STEPHEN CANNADY | PALLOTTI ’18
There may not be a better shooter locally at the point guard position than Stephen Cannady. Not only does he convert at a high percentage from the line, but the rising senior is a knock down three point threat with a solid middle game. Given the departure of post threat Karim Coulibaly, Cannady could be asked to score it more.
MYLES DREAD | GONZAGA ’18
Myles Dread is a player that feels the pulse of his team, and delivers what it needs. The Penn State commit, who finished third on the team in scoring last season, understands that he will need to be more aggressive offensively given departure of WCAC POY Chris Lykes. Dread will provide spacing, three point shooting, a solid mid range game, and the ability to consistently finish finish strong in the paint.
BRAYDEN GAULT | BATTLEFIELD ’18
Brayden Gault averaged nearly 18 points per game as a junior, and was held out of double figure scoring numbers in just one game. That game was a blowout, and if it had been close he probably would have scored at least 10 points. The aggressive wing is a knock down shooter from three, and a very efficient free throw shooter. Gault could very easily find himself listed among the top scorers in the DMV.
XAVIER JOHNSON | EPISCOPAL ’19
Xavier Johnson returns to Epsicopal as one of two players who averaged double figures. The rising junior, who pumped in a season high 30 in front of us at IAC rival St. Stephen’s St. Agnes, will likely be asked to score more given the departure of last season’s top scorer, George Mawanda-Kalema, to Brown. Johnson, who made 91 of 101 free throw attempts last year, also made 38 threes.
JUSTIN MOORE | DEMATHA ’19
It remains to be seen when he will actually return to the court, but there is little question that Justin Moore’s health will be vital to his team’s success this season. The rising junior, who has been cleared for workouts, was on a run of five consecutive games of 12 or more points before going down with a knee injury last season. We expect Moore to come back with a vengeance, and possibly lead the Stags in scoring.
MATT URBACH | WT WOODSON ’18
Matt Urbach has proven, both at the grassroots and high school level, that he can put the ball in the basket at a high level. The 6’4 wing, who hit 47 threes as a junior, is underrated off the dribble. Urbach is sneaky athletic, and crafty with the ball. He is adept at drawing contact, and improving as a finisher while he grows into his body.
