Tournament Wrap Up: Pure Focus Summer Slam
Our summer hoops tour took us to Forest Grove in late June for the Pure Focus Summer Slam, which brought over 50 teams to the best high school facility in the state at Forest Grove High School. We take a look at some of the new players that stood out from the event that featured teams from Oregon, Washington, & Utah.
Dalton Renne 6’7 Wing (2018/Banks HS)
The returning all state performer who fueled Banks to their best season in 30 years, picked up right where he left off. In a game against 6A Westview, Renne helped fuel a comeback from an 18 point deficit as the Braves picked up the victory over a school with eight times their enrollment. Renne simply has a knack for scoring in a variety of ways. As his physical strength and ball handling improve, his ceiling will only continue to rise.
Blake Gobel 6’7 Post (2019/Banks HS)
The physical Gobel provides a true presence on the defensive end of the floor. His ability to protect the rim and alter shots allows Banks to extend their 2-3 zone. Gobel is also an active rebounder who gets his hands on a lot of balls out of his area. An improving offensive threat that continues to get better every time we see him.
Tabor Bosco 6’9 Post (2018/Lasalle HS)
The long and athletic Bosco showed progress from the end of the high school season. He was active in transition and showed an improved defensive motor. The old adage of “you can’t coach height” holds true with Bosco, his physical attributes alone make him an intriguing college prospect.
James Helmen 5’8 Point Guard (2020/Clatskanie HS)
The strong Helmen showed the ability to score and lead his team on the way to a 3-0 record. A physical defender with an improving offensive game, Helmen is definitely a small school player to keep an eye on.
Teagan Cox 6’0 Guard (2018/Prosser HS (WA))
A physical guard who can shoot it to deep, Cox’s range was on display throughout the weekend. Must improve as a ball handler, but with his shooting ability and basketball IQ should make some college program happy someday.
Jacob Hjort 6’1 Guard (2018/Columbia River (WA))
The deadeye combo guard was in the groove on Saturday, leading his team to a couple of hard fought victories. Increased athleticism to go along with shooting range and a great feel for the game have kept Hjort on a lot of college radars.
Jay Gilson 6’5 Forward (2018/Summit Academy (UT))
Explosive athlete who plays above the rim was impressive throughout the weekend. More skilled than you would guess, we especially liked his passing ability and knack for finishing through contact at the rim.
