Top Point Guards (2019)
The point guard position is the most important in the game of basketball. Utah has one of the best in the country in Rylan Jones. I will be highlighting him along with several other standout point guards in the class of 2019.
Rylan Jones 6’1 (Olympus) is one of the best point guards in the entire country as he is ranked in the ESPN Top 100 for the class of 2019. He currently holds offers from BYU, Utah State, and the University of Utah. Jones is a pass first point guard that makes everyone around him better. He knows where his teammates like the ball and when they want the ball. He is a solid shooter and is very crafty finishing in the paint and can score over taller defenders.
Puka Nacua 6’1 (Orem) is an explosive athlete that is very good in transition when he has a full head of steam. He is an elite on ball defender and causes major havoc on opposing guards. Nacua is an solid three point shooter but he still needs to improve that aspect. He is a big time football recruit so it will be interesting to see if his focus on football hurts his basketball game.
Tyson Garff 6’4 (Davis) is a combo guard but has been playing point guard for his high school team this past June. He has great court vision and his height gives him a huge advantage as he can see over the top of defenders. Garff is a very good outside shooter which makes him hard to guard when defenders have to pressure up. He needs to improve his strength and finishing ability, and if he can Garff will be a D1 player in my opinion.
Jael Vaughn 6’0 (Herriman) is a very solid guard that can do a lot of things well. He has good court vision and is able to find his teammates for open shots. Vaughn has a quick first step which allows him to beat his defender often. He needs to work on his outside jumper and also his finishing moves when he is the paint. I think Vaughn is a lower-level college prospect.
Indy Hansen 6’0 (Alta) was the starting point guard for 5A Jordan High School as a sophomore. He has a very solid year in route to his team finishing in the quarter-finals of state. Hansen is a pass first point guard but can also score the ball. He is a solid three point shooter when he is open. Hansen has transferred to Alta high school due to a boundary change.
