Recap: Day two of Summer Take Flight Challenge
CULVER CITY, Ca — Day two of the inaugural Summer Take Flight Challenge at Culver City High brought together many of Southern California’s top high school programs for 10 games spread across 12 hours of daylight on Saturday.
Some of the top matchups included Taft vs. Crossroads, Dominguez vs. St. Bernard, Sierra Canyon vs. Dominguez and the nightcap of St. John Bosco vs. Bishop Montgomery, the defending CIF State Open Division champions.
View Park 52, Beverly Hills 35:
The guard-duo of rising senior Shamar Lair and incoming freshman Christian Johnson proved to be too much for Beverly Hills, which played most of its reserves after participating in Friday’s nightcap while simultaneously participating in the Fairfax Summer League.
Taft 59, Crossroads 48:
Sophomore-to-be Demetrius Calip II scored 19 points on 5 of 6 shooting from 3-point range, while UC Davis commit Kihei Clark added 15 points and six assists in the win for the Toreadors. Class of 2018 combo guard DJ Houston led Crossroads with 18 points in the absence of Arizona-bound forward Shareef O’Neal.
Leuzinger 68, Dorsey 43:
Amound Anderson, the No. 4 ranked player in Prep Hoops So-Cal’s class of 2020 rankings, scored nine first half points before sitting the second half with a groin injury.
Harvard-Westlake 58, Culver City 47:
The Wolverines were without top-ranked 2020 recruit Johnny Juzang and fellow classmates Mason Hooks and Brase Dottin, but earned the 11-point victory behind rising 6-7 freshman forward Truman Gettings and 2020 point guard Spencer Hubbard.
Culver City 59, Taft 54:
Culver City coach Reggie Morris deployed his full deck of talent in the back-to-back and class of 2018 forward Cyrus Johnson and 2021 shooting guard TJ Wainwright came up big. Johnson finished with 14 points and Wainwright added nine on three 3-pointers.
Dominguez 46, St. Bernard 42:
The Dons held on for the win despite missing 2018 shooting guard Wayne Arnold for the first 21 minutes of the game and 2019 guard Sean Harlston for all 28 minutes. Senior point guard Brenton Woods was the calming factor who paced Dominguez.
Sierra Canyon 55, Mayfair 43:
Cassius Stanley, the No. 2 ranked prospect in Prep Hoops So-Cal’s 2019 rankings, scored 20 points, while Kenyon Martin, Jr. added 10 as the Trailblazers defeated a severely undermanned Mayfair side.
Westchester 68, Van Nuys 45:
The Comets were led by its duo of 2019 guards Jordan Brinson and Jeremiah Turley, each of whom scored in double figures in the blowout victory.
Sierra Canyon 63, Dominguez 42:
Dominguez kept things close in the first half, trailing by five, 28-23, at the break, but the depth and all-around talent of Sierra Canyon took control in the final 14 minutes. KJ Martin scored 17 points with a handful of highlight dunks and 2019 forward L Simpson also scored in double figures. Wayne Arnold finished with 21 points, including six 3-pointers.
St. John Bosco 47, Bishop Montgomery 40:
The upset of the evening made sure to wait for the final game of the day as St. John Bosco took down Bishop Montgomery behind 17 points from 2019 forward Josh Adoh and 12 from 2018 forward Alpha Okoli. Bishop was without shooting guard David Singleton – the No. 6 ranked player in the Prep Hoops class of 2018 rankings – but were otherwise at full-strength. Rising junior Nick Schrader led the Knights with 12 points.
