Recap: Day 1 All-West Camp – Best Guards
WESTMINSTER, Ca. – Many of the top players in Southern California, strung across all classes, were on display Thursday during Day I of the two-day Fullcourt Press All-West Camp, presented by Pangos, at Westminster High.
The event, which wraps up Friday (beginning at 11 a.m., with each kid scheduled to play three games), serves as a nice “warm-up”, of sorts, for the first NCAA evaluation period that runs July 12-16.
Here’s a look at five of the backcourt performers that impressed myself and Devin Ugland on Thursday (listed alphabetically):
Devin Askew (Santa Ana Mater Dei/Class of 2021): Askew has already made quite an impact on the Mater Dei program this summer. Look for him to be the best backup point guard in SoCal next season. He could also be on the court at times with Harvard-bound Spencer Freedman as the Monarchs make runs for Southern Section and State Open Division titles.
Jarod Lucas (Hacienda Heights Los Altos/2019): The Compton Magic standout, all-CIF Southern Section as a sophomore, is one of the most versatile scorers in Southern California. He aptly displayed why Thursday.
Evan Oliver (Redlands Citrus Valley/2020): The son of Cal State San Bernardino Head Coach Jeff Oliver demonstrated his slick jump shot and well-advanced “middle game” Thursday while scooting by defenders in the open court and getting into the lane at will.
DeShawn Washington (San Bernardino Cajon/2018): The 6-foot-3 Washington will be running the offense for one of Southern California’s most gifted high school lineups next winter and spring. He’s capable of playing on or off the ball with equal effectiveness.
Daniel Zahabian (Beverly Hills/2018): Zahabian, one of the Southland’s most underrated point guards, was outstanding during recent tournaments hosted by Pasadena Maranatha, L.A. Fairfax and Culver City high schools. It was apparent immediately Thursday that he is one of the best passers in the event.
