Prospect Spotlight: Jaymarree Norton (2019)
Jaymarree “Jay” Norton said it’s time to stop sleeping on him.
Playing alongside Boogie Ellis at Mission Bay High School and on the San Diego All-Stars 16u Elite team, it’s easy to overlook him.
But recently, the 6-0 lefty, one of the most improved prospects in the 2019 class, has opened eyes with his intense brand of basketball and lockdown defense.
“Everyone can score the ball, I figured why not show colleges that I can defend and play hard on that end of the court,” Norton said.
The well-built guard has top-end athleticism and very quick feet, and prides himself on picking up guards full court.
Offensively, the combo guard can score off the catch and off the bounce. A streak shooter, Norton can gets hot in a hurry.
2019 Mission Bay G Jay Norton is on a mission to wake up college coaches.Norton said he needs to improve with his decision making, as well as creating with his non-dominant hand.
“I’m always in the gym looking to improve,” he said.
Norton said he’s playing with a sense of urgency lately, as he sees basketball as a way to improve his lot in life.
“My mom is a single mother and she struggles a lot,” Norton candidly told Prep Hoops. “I’m tired of seeing her struggle, and I am realizing that I have an opportunity to get us out of the situation that we are in.”
Norton currently doesn’t have a scholarship offer, but coaches have taken notice of his play. University of San Diego coaches noted his intensity at the June team camp.
“I feel I can play Division 1 basketball,” Norton said. “This year, I am going to make my name known and wake people up. They’ve been sleeping on me long enough.”
