Prospect Spotlight: Eric Powell (2018)
We are on the tail end of summer basketball and around the country college prospects at all levels are working on their game and working toward earning an opportunity to play at the next level. Prep Hoops Kentucky puts the spotlight on prospects around the Bluegrass State.
Eric Powell is a 6’3 guard from Lafayette High School in Lexington, KY. Powell helped lead Lafayette to 15 wins last season, ranking the Generals in the top half of the 11th Region, one of the toughest in the state. Lafayette had solid wins against Madison Central, Perry County Central, and Scott High School (the later two made the Kentucky state tournament).
“We fell short of making it to the regional tournament, but we had some pretty good showings against teams like Hargrave Military Academy, Scott High School, Scott County, Perry County and Cooper,” said Powell about his teams season last year. “Individually, I had some all-tournament selections and played pretty good in a number of games.” The senior-to-be averaged 11.2 points while shooting over 40% from the field (36.5% from 3-pt range).
Powell says he tries to do a number of different things for his team, especially doing whatever it takes to make it to the regional and state tournament. “I’m probably best known for my shooting, but I can run the point and I am able to penetrate and dish or finish with contact. I’m very coachable and active on defense.”
This summer Powell played with Team (CKY) Vision. “I have had some pretty good games and played against some good talent. Right now I am rehabbing from an injury last month and trying to get healthy for the upcoming high school season.” Powell said that his focus this summer was to work on getting better on the defensive end of the floor, getting quicker, driving ability, mid-range jumper, and improve court vision.
At Lafayette, Powell is a good student and works hard in the classroom. He went in to a little bit of detail about what he’s looking for in playing at the next level – “I want to be at a place that I feel welcome and have an opportunity to grow as an athlete and a student.”
Powell doesn’t currently hold any offers, but has received interest from local colleges such as Georgetown and Asbury. He’s been invited to both Georgetown and UIC’s elite camps.
