Prospect Spotlight: Dragan Hornatko (2018)
The blueprint of the ideal point guard in today’s game has changed drastically from the 1990’s. Not only are they expected to be the team’s floor general and distributor, but more often we are seeing the point guard be the featured scorer on teams. More importantly, it’s crucial for the point guard to be an efficient three-point shooter because it creates space on the floor for the rest of the players to operate.
Glenelg Country Day’s 2018 point guard Dragan Hornatko has a good balance of all the needed attributes of a point guard. His shot from three demands the respect of the defense at all times. You can tell when watching him that he may have been a shooting guard when he was younger with his mentality from deep. If he happens to miss a few shots, he stays at it like a good shooter does. Once he sees one go in, it helps get him going for the rest of the game.
The 5’11 floor general also does a solid job of getting the offense initiated. While he isn’t blazing quick, Hornatko has some crafty ball-handling skills with a good change-of-pace speed dribble to make up for it.
This summer, Hornatko is playing with the Team Orange AAU program. In terms of improvements during both AAU and summer league play Hornatko said, “Going into my senior year I’m focusing on being a better leader. Taking control of the team and making sure guys are where they’re supposed to be on the floor.”
Glenelg Country Day will enter the 2017-18 season with a new coaching staff, but they have a solid core that includes Hornatko that should respond well in the always tough MIAA A Conference.
Hornatko isn’t hearing from any colleges at the time. His 5’11 frame could be a reason why, but his ability to shoot the ball from the point guard position could be a great help, especially for Division III level schools. On top of what he can bring on the floor, he also gets it done in the classroom with a 3.6 GPA.
What will a college program get with Hornatko?
“A hard worker and a leader. A point guard who can shoot the ball and handle the ball whenever a team needs to.”
