Prospect Spotlight: Chris Koon (2019)
Some may talk about how they get it done both on and off the court, but Rolling Hills Prep shooting guard Chris Koon lives that reality.
The class of 2019 prospect helped lead the Huskies to a CIF State Division 5 championship last season, but more impressively, he finished last season with a cumulative 4.2 grade point average.
The smooth 6-foot-5 lefty only gives a lot of credit for his success to his legendary high school coach Harvey Kitani.
“It’s amazing,” Koon said of playing for Kitani. “He’s the best coach I’ve ever played for. He knows what he’s talking about and he teaches us amazing life skills, not just basketball.”
Rolling Hills Prep SG Chris Koon has early interest, working toward offers.Koon, like all high school players, has a dream at playing at the collegiate level and understands that he has some work to do in order to achieve that goal.
“Obviously the competition is a little higher, because Division 5 is kind of low,” Koon said of his club basketball competition. “I’m just working on playing at a higher level and rebounding better.”
The rising junior’s biggest strengths are his fluid 3-point shooting stroke, ability to use footwork and change of direction to get to the rim off the bounce and create for others and also his high basketball IQ which he uses to coordinate Kitani’s countless offensive sets.
But aside from rebounding, Koon knows that in order to compete at higher levels of competition on the high school, club and collegiate scenes, athleticism and shot making will be crucial and he’s working on that by playing up with Pump-N-Run’s 17u squad.
“Shot consistency has been big for me,” he said. “My quickness and slides have to be quicker to able to compete at the next level.”
Koon’s successes on and off the court have drawn the interest of two schools, but he hasn’t received any scholarship offers as of yet.
“I’ve got looks from Cornell and Long Beach State,” Koon said. “They’re just looks right now, so hopefully I can get some offers.”
