Double Pump Summer Tip-Off: San Diego Standouts
San Diego teams have been collecting wins and attracting the attention of college coaches at the Double Pump Summer Tip-Off.
Which local players turned our heads? Prep Hoops SoCal has the answer.
Best prospects:
Boogie Ellis, 2019 6-1 145 PG, San Diego All-Stars – Ellis dominated playing both 17u and 16u, scoring from all three levels and showing a much-stronger pull-up game in the half court.
Chris Howell, 2021 6-4 150 PG, Coastal Elite – Howell dominated his first game of the tournament, forcing on-ball and off-ball turnovers and converting them into scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. His transition dunk was one of the Day 1 highlights.
Steadiest:
Isaiah Morris, 2018 5-11 165 PG, Gamepoint- Known for his lockdown defense, Morris displayed the complete offensive repertoire today in a decisive win over SABC. But even more impressive was his passing, as he set the table for teammates who obliged by knocking down open shots.
Most improved:
Bryce Pope, 2019 6-2 165 SG, California Bearcats – Bryce Pope looks much leaner, and as a result is much quicker laterally on the both ends. He’s able to get to the basket and score from all three levels now, and is a much improved on-ball defender.
Jayson Taylor, 2019 6-9 200 C, Gamepoint Elite – While far from a finished product, Taylor is improving as a rebounder on both ends, and his position defense in the paint sparks his team’s potent transition attack.
Biggest surprises:
Cameron Barry, 2018 6-0 150 PG, Coastal Elite – The lanky floor general is the quintessential “coach’s son.” He plays with great pace, makes good decisions in shoot/ pass situations, and knocked down shots off the catch in a blowout of CT Elite.
Nashom Carter, 2018 5-11 160 PG, San Diego All-Stars – Carter, a prolific scoring guard known for his quick handle, caught our attention with his consistent shooting stroke from three and mid range. He filled it up in SDA 17u Elite’s win over Saints 17u.
Jaylen Hinson, 2018 6-2 160 G, San Diego All-Stars- The lefty’s game is streaky, but the slasher had several pretty runners through contact in SDA’s win over the Saints. Defensively, he has a nice combination of length, lateral quickness and effort.
Most athletic:
Jalen Flanagan, 2018 6-3 170 G, Coastal Elite – When he wasn’t knocking down shots off the catch in Coastal’s win over CT Elite, Flanagan was showing off a quick first step in the halfcourt and explosive leaping ability in transition. He’s turning the corner as a prospect.
Kyle Johnson, 2018 6-5 180 WF, Gamepoint – Johnson looks the part of a prototypical wing, and his game is coming along. His quick jumping allows him to chase rebounds out of his area, and he is a big-time finisher off the wing in transition.
Notes:
- Michael Pope (6-2 165 SG, California Bearcats) went on a personal 9-0 run to clinch the early morning win over Oklahoma Impact 17u. Like his brother, he’s improved athletically on both ends.
- Carter Plousha (6-5 160 W, Gamepoint Elite) is becoming a stout on-ball defender in his own right, picking up guards full court in his team’s opening-night win over BTI Select. He has the length, anticipation and athleticism to be a lock-down perimeter defender at the next level.
- Savaughn Davis (6-2 160 G, San Diego All Stars) and his teammate Brandon Angel (6-3 155 G) comprise a formidable 15u duo. Davis is a slasher with improved ball skills and Angel is an accurate shooter with a frame that oozes with upside.
- 2021 F Dillon Wilhite (6-6 170 F, Gamepoint Elite) and his 14u teammate Keavie Love (6-1 160 G) had solid performances filling in on Gamepoint’s 15u Elite team this weekend. Wilhite is one of the more polished post prospects in Southern California’s rising freshman class and expect Love to be listed as one of the top defenders in the 2021 class.
- Supreme Court 17u G Isaiah Camon (6-2, 200 2017 PG) continued his strong play from spring, when he caught our attention with his physical brand of play on both ends. He can bully smaller guards, but has solid handles and improved court awareness.
