BSN Summer League Superlatives (Part 5)
HYATTSVILLE, MD — With the recent conclusion of the annual BSN Summer League at DeMatha, it’s time to take a closer look at some of the standouts. Here is the final part of our superlatives series.
BEST NEWCOMER | EARL TIMBERLAKE | DEMATHA ‘20
In the six games we saw him play, Timberlake averaged 15.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1 steal. The talented rising sophomore played the point, and did a nice job getting into the lane where he created and finished well in traffic.
BEST BREAKOUT PERFORMER | MATT BALANC | SPRINGBROOK ‘18
Yes, most people in Montgomery County are well aware of what Balanc can do, but he’s stating to gain recognition among a more broad audience. In the four games we saw, he averaged 27.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1 steal on 49% field goal shooting. Balanc hit a buzzer beater to send the game into overtime against DeMatha, where he erupted for a game-high 34 despite losing in two overtimes.
MOST ENERGETIC | ISAIAH GROSS | ROOSEVELT ‘19
Roosevelt was one of the more fun teams to watch. This is because of the passion they play with when they’re rolling. At the center of this enthusiasm is where you will find Isaiah Gross. The stocky 6’3 wing is active on the boards, and plays with a chip.
MOST EXPLOSIVE | NENDAH TARKE | BULLIS ‘19
Tarke had easily one of the most exciting plays at summer league when he posterized a defender in the DeMatha game. He followed up that game by pouring in 32 points and pulling down 14 rebounds while blocking two shots and swiping four steals against Georgetown Prep. Tarke is not the biggest scoring guard, but he more than makes up with it with his athleticism and consistently high motor.

MOST UNDERRATED | MATT URBACH | W.T. WOODSON ‘18
Urbach was a key factor in Woodson’s 8-2 regular season. The 6’4 rising senior averaged 18.75 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in the four games we watched. Urbach is known for his ability to make shots from deep, but impressed with his overall game. Defensively, he was engaged, and active. He demonstrated a quick first step, attacked the basket aggressively off the bounce, and showed some craftiness at the rim.
MOST VERSATILE | DEVON FLOWERS | POTOMAC SCHOOL ‘18
Flowers did a bit of everything for his team. In the four games we saw, he averaged nearly 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks. The 6’8 big man is nimble, and equally as effective on the perimeter as he is in the paint defensively.
