Oklahoma 2020 Class has a chance to be special
The Oklahoma 2020 Class has a chance to be incredibly special. This weekend at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament several 2020 players are making huge strides. Get a look at seven of the top 2020 Oklahoma Class that are separating themselves from the pack. Three players Bryce Thompson, Rondel Walker and Jameson Richardson are on an upper tier level that project to the High Major Division I level. Thompson and Walker both hold High Major Division I offers.
The Oklahoma 2020 Class has a chance to have multiple High Major Division I players at the top with a good crop of Division I players after the top three or four as well. It will be interesting to see who develops over time and what level each of them end up. The 2020 Class is a testament to the rise in the last four years of Oklahoma prospects signing with Division I programs. The basketball in Oklahoma continues to increase throughout the state. Could the success of continually double-digit Divison I signees in Oklahoma high school hoops point to the OKC Thunder? It is an interesting thought as the Thunder came to Oklahoma when players in high school now were 8-11 years old. Maybe some of the players who are would have chosen football are now choosing hoops.
One thing is for sure the 2020 Oklahoma Class is putting on a show at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament. Get a look at the players below!
Rondel Walker Team Griffin Guard
This weekend could be called Walker’s personal showcase. He is dominating cats of the floor making it look easy. On Saturday Walker dropped 52 points in a game for Team Griffin. That is not a typo 52. As a Combo Guard Walker is a bucket getter from all three levels on the floor. He had a huge year at Putnam City West is using this spring and summer on the grassroots circuit to build off of it. Walker holds an Oklahoma State offer that came in June with many other schools starting to realize just how much of a chance Walker has to be an elite player. Walker does many things excellent which help him impact the game in so many different ways. This weekend Walker has not only showcased his scoring skills but has done it efficiently. One thing that separates him as a scorer is he does not need a ton of shots. Walker is a good passer will a high basketball IQ which is why he may end up as a Point Guard when he goes off to college. The versatility of Walker to be able to play the one or the two is huge. Walker is a big time talent in the 2020 Class that many colleges are just laying eyes on for the first time this weekend at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament. Prep Hoops currently has him ranked as the second best player in the Oklahoma 2020 Class with a High Major projection.
Bryce Thompson Oklahoma Run PWP Wing
Thompson as we previously wrote about is having a great weekend at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament. He is an elite volume shooting sniper in the Oklahoma 2020 Class playing up at the 16U grassroots level nationally on the Under Armour Circuit. Thompson has the “IT” factor to his game that makes him a player colleges are clamoring for even with his young age. He thrives running off screens, moving well without the ball to find cracks in the defense to score. The hardest thing to guard when it comes to Thompson is the fact he only needs just a little space to get a shot and score. Thompson is growing not only in height but on the floor as a player immensely this summer. He is ranked the #1 player in the Oklahoma 2020 Class with his elite scoring, size at 6’4 (Still growing), high basketball IQ and leadership on the floor. Leadership is one thing that stood out about Thompson this weekend as he was very vocal with his team encouraging them and letting them know where to be set up. As Thompson matures, body strength will help push his game to another level. He has the highest ceiling of any Oklahoma 2020 player with his size, pure jumper, and the potential for growth on both ends of the floor.
Jameson Richardson Team Griffin Forward
Richardson has come a long way this summer as a player seeing the national grassroots scene for the very first time. He is showing definite signs of being a High Major Division I stretch four man. The ability for Richardson to open up the offense with his jump shooting makes him stand out. The other intangibles that push him into the High Major projection level are his size, rebounding and shot adjuster. This summer Richardson has grown as a player possibly more than any player in Oklahoma. Any time a player is facing good talent time and time again it makes them better or as many say “iron sharpens iron.” Richarson needs to continue to get stronger, tougher and play against top tier talent in the summer to get him ready for the High Major Division I level. But the talent is certainly there. Richardson is ranked the third best player with his potential in the Oklahoma 2020 Class.
Dayten Holman Team Griffin Point Guard
Holman is a long, lanky 6’5 Point Guard with elite floor general skills in the making. Many times this weekend he makes plays where you see the flash, talent, and reason why people are so high on Holman. He is a team first guy creating for others around him off the dribble. Holman gets his baskets mainly driving to the rim or from mid-range. A jumper is the biggest thing holding back Holman from the High Major level. At this point he projects to the Division I level because of his consistent play at the Point Guard spot putting his teammates in the best position to succeed. He is a fascinating player to watch with a ton of upsides, especially if he gets a good jumper added to his game.
Trey Phipps Oklahoma Run PWP Guard
Phipps is a scoring beast from just about anywhere on the floor with his sniper jumper. The kid can fill up the stat sheet. This weekend the biggest area of growth precisely for Phipps is breaking the mold of he can just shoot he drove the ball to the rim really strong showing he has more to his game than just a jumper. The shot of Phipps already led Oral Roberts to offer him. In a day and age where shooting is so valuable Phipps will end up as a sought after Guard by Division I programs in the Oklahoma 2020 Class. His level at this point is a little hard to gauge but with his size right now and jumper anywhere from Low to Mid Major plus Division I is where Prep Hoops has Phipps college projection. He is making a strong case as a top five 2020 Oklahoma player.
Brock Davis Oklahoma Run PWP Forward
Standing around 6’5 Davis impressed with his body, size, and frame. He bullied his opponents at times in the paint this weekend. Rebounding the ball was a strong area for Davis at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament. Davis is raw in some places of his game however he did show some nice scoring bursts this weekend. Size will certainly factor into where he ends up college wise, but it is pretty evident he will likely be a Division I player with his skill set. He projects to the Low to Mid Major Division I level.
Traejon Davis Gym Time Hoops Wing
Davis has done an excellent job doing some things for Gym Time Hoops on the Wing. First off Davis is the only player in the Oklahoma 2020 Class to play up at the 17U age group which will help his game over time. He has not had the best grassroots season compared to the others on the list, but his growth is evident. Davis scored the ball well attacking the rim at the Mullen’s High Profile Tournament. He is a long with a good build around 6’5 with some skill which is very intriguing. Davis will have a chance to be a Division I player with added improvement in his game. With playing in a small class in homeschool basketball the spring and summer with Gym Time Hoops will be very critical to his growth and exposure as a player.
