Recruiting Report: Daniel Zahabian (2018)
In this day and age where new prospects are unveiled on the Internet at an alarming rate, it’s definitely an aberration to find a senior-to-be with college potential not to be on anybody’s radar–until now.
Daniel Zahabian was a 2nd Team All-Ocean League selection as a junior, but has yet to muster up any college attention despite having many of the intangibles college coaches and scouts like to see in a point guard.
Zahabian is an ultra quick point guard who slices and dices suffocating defenses with aplomb. His initial burst is terrific and he has the length and strength to carry defenders on his hip while penetrating.
“One of my greatest strengths is my speed and ball handling.”
While on the break his head is always up surveying the defense and he shows the ability to snap passes–utilizing one or two hands–to open teammates streaking to the rim. If there isn’t an open teammate he possesses the skill to toss in a runner or nail the mid-range pull-up jump shot at the elbow.
One area of concern, however, is his reluctancy to shoot any jump shots beyond the elbow as there were a number of opportunities for him to take that particular shot–and Zahabian quickly pointed that out when discussing his weaknesses.
“An area that I need to improve on or at least find confidence in, is my ability to extend the range on my jump shot to keep defenses honest.”
At this stage Zahabian has shockingly never played on the club basketball circuit, but as the July evaluation period approaches, there should be a plethora of club programs chomping at the bit to snag this up-and-coming point guard prospect.
