Recruiting Report: (2019), Anwar Gill (Gonzaga HS)
Anwar Gill, 6’4.5″, CG, Gonzaga College HS Washington, DC, 2019.
Anwar was coming into his own this past season and playing major minutes for Gonzaga HS, who finished 32-5 and ranked #8 in the nation by Max Preps. Unfortunately, Anwar’s season came to an end on 2-17-17 when he broke his 5th metatarsal bone in his foot. He had surgery one week later and Anwar had to wait 2.5 months before any weight bearing exercises could begin. Anwar said, ” It is tough when an athlete has to deal with an injury, but I did not want to just lay around. I worked on other parts of my body, such as doing sit ups & push ups and trying to improve myself. Our season at Gonzaga was not complete after my injury and I traveled with the team and studied our games from the bench. However, I was itching to get out there and play.”
Gonzaga is a very prestigious academic school and the Eagles take classwork very seriously for all students and athletes.Anwar says, “Coach Turner and my parents are very big influences on me to stay focused in school on my academics. Coach Turner stays on top of all of us, and he knows immediately if we have any slip ups in the classroom. My studies have not been easy, but I am doing pretty good now. Gonzaga has great academic support and I love my school, Coaches, teammates and the Athletic Department.
Anwar added.” In mid May, I continued my physical therapy with Mrs. Colleen Emorie who has helped me tremendously and is our Team Trainer at Gonzaga. She is great with our athletes in giving us excellent care, support and encouragement. In the middle of May I was cleared to begin running and I began shooting drills.”
Amazingly Anwar played for the DC Blue Devils 17 & U on Memorial Weekend in Los Angeles and logged a weekend game high 10 minutes of game action vs Texas Hard Work. Anwar hit 4 of 5 shots and grabbed 4 rebounds in the Blue Devils win. Anwar said, ” It felt kind of funny playing after being out for 3.5 months. I need to get my wind back and will be working hard on my conditioning. My goal is to be 100% by July.” The Blue Devils will play in the Under Armour Circuit finals in Atlanta from July 12-15.”

We have seen Anwar play many times this past season and we believe he has potential to be a D1 recruit and a nationally ranked player. We awarded Anwar All DMV-495 5th Team this spring. Anwar has proven to be an excellent defender & rebounder with a great wingspan. He has a great ability to attack the rim in transition and utilize his high level pull up game. Anwar says,” Last year I was a 2 and a 3, and this year I will be a PG and WG. I am working a lot on my ball handling, shooting off the dribble and expanding & improving my overall game. I will be very dedicated in my efforts to develop all the skills necessary for a PG or CG offensively and defensively.”
Anwar has put in a lot of work this spring and will continue his great work ethic. ” In the morning I work on my ball handling with Coach Torrey Farrington, and in the afternoon I do strength and conditioning with my trainer Dejuan Ellis. After workouts I get Croy Therapy in a chamber and this rejuvenates my body and helps me recover.”
This coming season Gonzaga must replace dynamic Top 55 PG Chris Lykes who will attend Miami, very valuable 6’5′ utility player Eddie Scott who will play in the Ivy League at the University of Pennsylvania, and 6’4″ WG/SF Micheal Myers who will play at Williams College in Massachusetts. However the Eagles return 6’3″ PG Prentiss Hubb who is ranked #35 nationally & committed to Notre Dame, and 6’5″ WG/WF Myles Dread who is committed to Penn State. Anwar says, ” I know we will be very, very good this year, but we must replace 3 excellent starters who understood their roles & sacrificed for the team. I think we have 3 players who are close locks to start which are Prentiss, Myles and 6’7″ 2020 sophomore Terrance Williams. Nothing else is finalized and Coach Turner will put his best chemistry team on the floor. Our team has great faith in Coach Turner we think he is the best Coach in the DMV.”
At his point in time we anticipate Anwar has an excellent chance to start or see major minutes this coming season. Other players who have a chance to play a lot or start for Gonzaga are:
Josh Watts, 6’4″, SG/WF, 2019.
Myles Stute, 6’6′ WF/WG, 2020.
Please read our recent Recruiting Report for Myles below:
Myles Stute (2020) prepares to take on bigger role at Gonzanga
Chuck Harris, PG, 6’2″, 2020.
Other key players who could factor in are 6’6″ 2018 PF Allin Blunt, and 6’7″ 2019 PF Kenny Wilburn.
This summer during an overlap for the DC Blue Devils , Anwar is playing for Gonzaga HS in the excellent BSN / DeMatha Summer League @ DeMatha HS in Hyattsville, MD run by DeMatha’s fantastic Head Coach Mike Jones. The DeMatha / BSN League will conclude on July 3 with the Championship. We saw Anwar vs McNamara won by DeMatha on Saturday & he looked good. This coming weekend Anwar will play in the Villanova vs Maryland Tournament at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland.
