Point Guard Watch (2018) : Part 1
These are 5 rising senior point guard prospects from North Carolina that haven’t received much publicity. Each of them have proved themselves over the course of their high school career and will look to have huge senior seasons.
| 5’10” PG | Greene Central High School
Greene Central had arguably the best season in the history of their high school this past season, largely due to the emergence of Donquez Davis. He consistently controlled the pace of each game, defended, created havoc in the paint and kept all of his teammates involved offensively. Alley-oop passes over defenders were a regular sight with him at the point guard position and well as long range bombs and some slick crossovers, drawing much delight from the crowd. Without a doubt, Donquez will have a chance to play at the next level and be a steady option to run a team.
| 6’0” PG | Kerr Vance Academy
A scoring machine at the point guard position. Quietly put up huge scoring numbers as a junior guard playing under the tutelage of former Wake Forest point guard Tarron Downey. Despite being a 30 point per game level scorer, he’s very unselfish. Looks to get his teammates involved at all times and stays on the attack. Has a shifty handle and keeps defenders in recovery mode. Will have a chance to turn heads this upcoming season now that more people are aware of his skillset. College coaches on the east coast should come check him out.
| 6’4” PG | Riverside High School (Williamston, NC)
Bonds is a matchup nightmare for typical guards. He’s big and strong enough to guard multiple positions. Really gets into the chest of opposing guards and speeds up teams offenses with his defensive pressure. Great size for the position. Can get really shifty with the ball in his hands, keeps his head up at all times while seeing plays before they happen. Will rack up big scoring and big assists numbers as a senior. Due to being known more as a football player holding D1 offers, he’s flown way under the radar on the hardwood. Make no mistake, he’s a definite D1 level basketball talent as well.
| 6’0” PG | Kinston High School
On a list with several guards that have reputations as great defenders, Moore could possibly be the most respected of them all. This kid flat out gets after it defensively and makes life miserable for any guard that isn’t use to intense ball pressure. Offensively, his game has grown and he’s become a reliable outside shooter and an excellent passer in transition as well as in half-court sets. You won’t see too many kids outhustle him either. College coaches will love the leadership qualities, toughness and stability he’ll bring to the next level.
| 5’11” PG | Jones Senior High School
Yet another college level point guard that has flown under the radar. Janari Hill is a former Free Press Player of the Year. He won the award as a sophomore in a basketball rich area that includes teams such as perennial powerhouse Kinston High School and most recent regional runner-up Greene Central. Hill is cat quick with the ball in his hand and extremely crafty. Splits traps with regularity, finishes contested layups at an extremely high rate and gets to the free throw line. Does a great job of protecting the ball against high pressure as well. There is a lot to like about Janari and he’ll certainly put up some gaudy numbers as a senior that will force colleges to pay Jones Senior HS a visit.
