2018 Rankings: Top Point Guards
The class of 2018 is a solid one for the Bluegrass State. With our release of the latest version of the 2018 Prospect Rankings, we look to break down each position. Prep Hoops Kentucky breaks down the top point guards here:
Andrew Taylor, Corbin High School (Louisville Magic AAU)
Taylor, depending on where he chooses to play at the next level, could end up having one of the more successful college careers of any prospect in the 2018 class. He is getting offers from schools that clearly fit his game and ability to impact a program. He currently holds offers from Davidson, Belmont, Air Force, Penn, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Furman, any a number of others.
Taylor is capable of playing the game as a combo guard, as he has the ability to share the ball an hit shots from a number of different spots on the floor. He averaged just under 30 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior for the Redhounds.
Adam Kunkel, Cooper High School (22 Vision AAU)
Kunkel is capable of playing both positions, but has the size to make a good point guard at the mid-major level. He is skilled and crafty. He helped lead Cooper to it’s first ever state tournament appearance as a junior last season, and assisted in guiding them all the way to the final game. He averaged just under 17 points per game. He currently holds offers from such schools as Lipscomb, Belmont, Northern Kentucky, Miami, and Wright State.
Anthony Wales, Fern Creek High School (Louisville Magic AAU)
Wales committed early to D-1 Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He has had a solid summer with Adidas Guantlet powerhouse Louisville Magic. As a junior last season, Wales averaged 14.3 points and 3 rebounds per game while running the point for the Tigers of Fern Creek.
Jalen Johnson, Hopkinsville High School
The Hopkinsville point guard led the Tigers in schoring, averaging 17.7 points per game. Johnson also helped lead Hopkinsville to the Kentucky state tournament this year.
Cobe Penny, Anderson County High School (LEX Future AAU)
Penny probably falls more under the combo guard label, but has shown signs of being able to control the offense while also scoring in mass amounts. He averaged 20 points and and 7 rebounds as a junior last season. Penny is built like a running back and finds lanes like one too. He’s hard to stop down hill and can get going from deep. Bellarmine has shown interest and OVC schools Morehead State and Murray State plan to watch in July.
Brennan Hall, Newport Central Catholic (Louisville Lightning AAU in July)
Hall primarily plays the point guard position, but is capable of playing the combo spot as well. He can drive and create dish out opportunities for his teammates. Can shoot pull up jumpers and knock down 3-pt field goals. Loves to defend the ball. Brennan averaged around 16 points per game as a junior.
Eric Boone, Bryan Station (Louisville Magic AAU)
The Lexington, KY guard has had a solid summer with Louisville Magic and continues to improve on his game. As a junior, he averaged 14 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while running the point.
KEEP AN EYE ON:
Solomon Mathis, Kentucky Country Day
Mathis averaged 17 points per game as a junior for Kentucky Country Day while shooting over 45% from the field.
Markelle Turner, Knox Central
Averaged 18 points and shot over 50% from the field as a junior. Look for Turner to try and make Knox Central a contender in the 13th Region next season.
