2018 Rankings Breakdown: Francisco’s Finest (part 2)
Our breakdown of the 2018 rankings continues with Francisco’s Finest, part 2! Who are the 2018’s best in a variety of categories?
Best Glue-type
Fletcher Tynen (Torrance, CA/ Bishop Montgomery)
Joel’s Take: Affects the game in multiple ways and his offensive game is blossoming.
Quickest Point Guard
Darryl Polk (Long Beach, CA./Poly)
Joel’s Take: One of the quickest guards in recent memory. Add in a much-improved jump shot and savvy and you have a Division 1 baller.
Best rim protector and rebounder
Fred Odihambo (Mission Hills, CA./ Alemany)
Joel’s Take: Remarkable length, feet and timing. Pursues rebounds in and out of his area and keeps the ball high at both ends. A potential gem.
Biggest Sleeper
Zekiah Lovett (Redondo Beach, CA./Redondo Union)
Joel’s Take: Hasn’t received the ballyhooed attention like his brother Marcus Lovett (St. Johns), but this lengthy point guard prospect has the physical tools and feel to be a Division 1 recruit.
Biggest Surprise
Daniel Zahabian (Beverly Hills, CA./Beverly Hills)
Joel’s Take: Had not heard of him until I spent a night at the Fairfax Summer Classic. Despite receiving zero attention from college coaches, this true point guard is ultra quick, snaps passes, and he has a ton of moxie.
Best Defender
Tony Goodwin (Pasadena, CA./Maranatha)
Joel’s Take: Relentless is the first word that comes to mind when describing Goodwin on the defensive end. Terrific length, a bulldog mentality, and he slides his feet fluidly.
Best Shooter
Blake Burzell (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach)
Joel’s Take: Was incognito this spring, but this 6-foot-5 jump shooter can tickle the twine with the best.
Most Versatile
Payton Moore (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica)
Joel’s Take: Fits perfectly in this position-less world of basketball today. Terrific motor and affects the game with his athleticism, leadership, and evolving skill.
Most Relentless
Jules Bernard (Los Angeles/Windward)
Joel’s Take: Always in attack mode. Excels in transition and is one of the most effective slashers in the game on this level.
Best Two-Sport Athlete
Jeremiah Martin (San Bernadino, CA./Cajon)
Joel’s Take: Martin terrorizes opponents on the hardwood as well as on the gridiron. One of the elite Defensive Ends in the country is also a high motor 4-man who can affect the game with his rebounding, finishing, and knack of always being around the ball.
